Buying an RS4 or an S4 - Advice?

Post by CDTi » Sat Jun 24, 2006 6:24 pm

Hello, newbie here. Currently looking into buying an RS4 for around £22k and found quite a few.

Also been looking at an S4 (Mik's) and it seems to be pushing out the same power as a standard RS4. But I don't like the S4 looks....

Questions:
1) RS4 Turbos - Are they that much of a problem?
2) Turbo Replacement is an engine out job? How hard if so? Engine come out the top or the bottom?
3) Any other major issues to look out for on an RS4 70-90k miles? Early one?
4) Can you get a complete RS4 bodykit to fit an S4?
5) Silly one but rough fuel economy figures please?

I think I prefer the RS4 as it is just so rare and looks so good.

Selling a Diesel if anyone with an RS4 is interested in some economy for part ex and cash.

Had a good read through the forums already and the info is excellent :)

1. Not typically but at big mileages I'd be getting some serious warranty cover
2. Someone will be along shortly
3. Gearbox, and again someone will give more info I'm sure
4. Why???
5. Low 20's

No offence, but I'd be trying to sell your car elsewhere first. I can't see an RS4 owner wanting to PX for yours. Might save you some time and put you in a better buying position.
RS4 B5. Where it all started.
RS6+ Never to be replaced.
Replaced by: 997 Turbo. Didn't like.
Replaced by RS6. I like(d).
Land Rover Defender. Not as nippy.
Back with C6 RS6
And again C7 RS6

1. As bobjebb says - some cars gor 150k miles without problems. Mine replaces at 60k due to a bearing failure.
2. Engine out jobby. Don't know which way as I had a my dealer do the job under warranty.
3. Dunno
4. Again why? The money you spend on such mods won't add that much to the resale value of the car. The RS4 is rare (only 400 made for UK ??)
5. Depends on your right foot. I average 21½ (my S4 averaged 22½) and this is daily driving. Motorway driving gives better economy. But lets face the facts here....the RS4 is a supercar in everything but name, you shouldn't be even worrying about fuel economy on these cars...would you be asking the same question if you bought an Italian supercar?

All your points have been covered over the years, do a search for turbos, you will find all the articles you need plus photos in some cases.
