Mine was just the quick release itself leaking, which allowed fuel to get under the plastic and make it bubble, rather than a crack in the pipework causing the leak.

Outside of visual appeal, I don't believe that there is any noticeable difference in performance, handling etc between the two types. Outside of that the advice above is spot on.

I know this sounds very silly, but with the gearbox in Park can you continually push on the gearstick, forward towards the dash, and then try locking then unlocking the car using the button on the drivers side door (the one which does all the car locks) and see what happens. I had a fuel leak on the top left of the engine bay which was that plastic disconnect you mentioned.
