Well, got home, got a Vagcom, connected it up and voila: 1 Fault Found: 17090 - Transmission Range Sensor (F125): Implausible Signal P0706 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent Seems I need to replace the F125 with something that sends a more plausible signal. ...anyway, better than replacing the gearbox. :)

I believe I've already got one.....

I had my DRC swapped out with PSS9s back in 2007.

To be honest, the last time I used vagcom a few years ago, I couldn't make much sense of it. With a new gearbox at stake, this time I'll be reading the instructions.

Are you absolutely sure that the lock operated?

Violence is the answer when the door is just frozen into its frame, but if the lock sticks there is not that much that can be done until it warms up, which takes ages even with the heater full on.
