Thanks for your comments Andrew. Your explanation ties in with what I was beginning to understand. I think that the standard Bosch valve can have a tendancy to oscillate and this was probably the noise that I've heard. I'm sure my car has had this replaced...maybe to a different type which is silent...

I've had to remove my rad a number of times and with it most of the skin from my knuckles. I still can't decide the best way since it's such a squeeze and it's like a 3 layer sandwich, the heavy fan assembly, main Rad & then Air con Rad. I've ditched the air con ( regretting it now! )as it was empty...
