I had exactly the same symptoms with my car 2 days after i bought it. Absolutely worried me sick. Took it to Vagtech an independent near Leighton Buzzard. Turned out to be the oil pressure sender. Phew!

Sorry I probably didn't explain my self properly. Viscous fan is fine, electric fan behind rad is the one I have never seen working.

I have a problem with the electric cooling fans, the fan in front of the air- con rad runs almost constantly at full speed like a jet engine. The fan engine side of rad I have never seen work. I have replaced the fan controller and the temperature sensor that controls temperature gauge to no avail. ...
