RS6 Avant-anybody know it?
Looking at an RS6, very cheap as it has no service history, from the photos it looks very straight but I need to go see it in the flesh. Always wanted one and I can spanner and engineer so I'm not afraid of working on it and already planned to do a full engine service if I get it.
The "dealer" (I buy and sell in my spare time he says) said the previous owner has all the history but cannot find it. He had it up for 10k on the promise that it would be found but is now hovering around the 5k mark. I don't think I'd every get it but it's a risk to take but I was told if it did turn up he'd pass it on.
Anyway, the reg is R5 GUH if anybody knows of it or had it as a previous car would be grateful to know more about it?

Re: RS6 Avant-anybody know it?
MOT history assuming it's about 130k miles doesn't look great.
I'd think if you pay £5k you'll need at least that in repairs. Possibly more.
I'd personally be more concerned it's a ringer or dodgy in other ways. Nobody with an RS6 now loses the history. There's usually far too much of it.
Did the 'dealer' say where the previous owner had said they took it for servicing etc?
One of those history check things wouldn't be a bad idea. You need the VIN. Also check it matches all the glass where it's also etched.
A lot of the above is a big 'run away' klaxon.

Yeah, this car definitely has run away written all over it.
Here's one that's cheap but sounds marginally less risky:

Re: RS6 Avant-anybody know it?
Thanks for the feedback, agreed that it is a little too risky, if it was something I had a proper garage for to house, strip and work on over time then it could be okay but still very risky.
Shoppinit - why do you say the ebay one is marginally less risky? Something missing which should have been done or just because of the suspension?

Re: RS6 Avant-anybody know it?
Just because there’s always something they’re not telling you. The more elaborate the “sales story” the more my spider senses tingle. If going for a 6.5k car then you’re looking to be spending close to 2k on PSS9 (or a similar amount trying to fix the DRC, assuming that’s what’s failed) and another few grand on a gearbox. At least if there’s service history then you know the oil was changed occasionally. The engine is pretty solid in these, but doesn’t suffer neglect well.

Or maybe it’ll be a bargain and only the suspension needs doing. Always better to go into these things pessimistic and be pleasantly surprised.

Re: RS6 Avant-anybody know it?
Looking at the MOT history, nothing too problematic, especially if you can DIY.
Probably worth looking at.
At that price you can't expect a perfect example.

Re: RS6 Avant-anybody know it?
Very luck that I have space to DIY and already have a GTI so can VCDS to a degree. 2k to fix the suspension isn't too bad if it goes get me a solid car.
The service history is complete with a gearbox service not too long ago, where and by who is a different story so will see when I go look at it.
Big issue I have with it is that because the suspension is so "bouncy" I don't think I can drive it very hard to really test it, and with no MOT it'll only be on farm tracks, big risk so hopefully able to bid him down

Re: RS6 Avant-anybody know it?
You need to get it into a situation where you can do a reasonably hard first to second gear change, imagine like when you are pulling out of a junction into a stream of traffic to find out how bad the gearbox is. No need to go mental, particularly if the box is cold. If you bounce the limiter or it smashes home with a bang, expect to spend £5k having the gearbox done.
Re: RS6 Avant-anybody know it?
I have VCDS so I can plug in and check any error codes first, does the box normally give any before it starts to go or is it all on feel/performance?
The car has no MOT so is limited to around farm tracks and max about 30mph due to the suspension bounce. Bigger risk is there is an issue at the top end or not really being able to test it.
Still debating if I should go look, desperate for one but just unsure about all the costs, and as will everything I have read would need deep pockets to keep it in good condition. I've reached out to Unit20 & MRC on booking in an initial inspection.

Re: RS6 Avant-anybody know it?
It’s entirely possible (common?) for the box to be mechanically faulty and cause slipping and flaring, without any lights on.
Borrow some trade plates or find a nice private road so you can test it, doesn’t need to be fast fast, stationary to 30mph will probably show up, you just need to feel a gear change under reasonable acceleration or ideal a couple. If not, assume the box will need a ~5k rebuild (pricing per unit 20 this spring).

Re: RS6 Avant-anybody know it?
Going to go try to look at it during the week. If the suspension is shot, is there a way to fix the DRC or does it have to be replaced? I'd rather keep it original if I can
Re: RS6 Avant-anybody know it?
Essentially its a simple system, purely mechanical. Often it is a leak in the system that causes issues. I think the hardest thing is to find some one who has the kit to refill and pressurise the system once it has been repaired. I imagine some one like Unit 20 would have it and be able to do this for you.
