Coolant gone, ok to fire up the engine for 10-20 secs?
Hi guys
Just a quick one. Life has changed for the better and the various broken cars on my driveway including our beloved 6, are all being picked up this week to go to their respective garages for fixing up.
During her three or so years sitting on the driveway, a leak sprang somewhere and there isn't a drop of coolant in the expansion tank/when doing the occasional turnover with fuse 29 pulled, I get the low coolant warning of course.
She is getting picked up on a loader tomorrow, but due to where she is parked and being on a slope, I really could do with quickly moving her to make the pickup work better.
If I reckon I can get the move around/turn complete in under 20 seconds, what is the general consensus about me getting away with that safely on no coolant? Of course I don't want to be doing that at all, but don't really have a choice.
Cheers,
Nick.

Re: Coolant gone, ok to fire up the engine for 10-20 secs?
Glad to hear things have improved for you, Nick.
I'd have thought it'd be fine, but would it not be worth adding some coolant to the tank (even just plain water, if it's going to be drained anyhow, as part of the work), just to be sure?

Re: Coolant gone, ok to fire up the engine for 10-20 secs?
Hey Nick, I hope things are all good with you.
I did do that previously and very briefly fired her up when I first saw that the tank level was low, but there was no change in level at all. Not surprising really as it doesn't work like that, but I'll give it another go before firing her up. This is going to be one super-quick 5-point turn on the driveway!

It wouldn’t worry me particularly, but as Nick says, filling with tap water is a no brainer.

Re: Coolant gone, ok to fire up the engine for 10-20 secs?
Thanks guys. I filled the coolant tank to the brim, fired her up and did the quickest 7-point move to turn her around and away from the fence I could have possibly done, around 20 secs and off. Even with nearly three-year-old fuel in her and not having been fired up in what must be a year or so, she fired right up straight away and did as she was told. God I love this old girl.
She is ready to go, being picked up tomorrow morning. Ignore the state of the garage door paintwork, there is a reason that it looks like crap I promise

Re: Coolant gone, ok to fire up the engine for 10-20 secs?
RD Garage Services in Shepperton are pulling her apart, I know them, trust them, they have worked on her and the C7 before and they were prepared to do the work on her just before Covid hit too. They are solid, dependable and like these old girls.
They have stopped doing any sort of uprating work though (as in providing parts), which makes things more interesting depending on what I do. I am not sure currently where I am going to get the uprated turbos from or any of the other bits to tear out and uprate really. Work doesn't officially start on her until 19/09/23, so I have some time to figure things out. The main reason for getting her gone today was that we have major roadworks that are about to block my driveway in weeks.....
Assuming that the turbos are uprated, then MRC will be asked nicely to work their magic on the map again.
I have factored in around £15k to get her as sorted as realistically possible and will go from there.

Did you wash and wax her before they collected her.
Puts me to shame.
Now I have got to get the wax out.

LMAO, no, trust me on that! The photo is very flattering, the paint is looking very sorry for itself after three years unwashed until yesterday. A pressure wash to deal with the worst of it/moss, warm bucket with bubbles quickly and cold rinse bucket, then she was stuck on the truck.
She had leaves, moss, cobwebs, you name it all over her, looked pretty awful on the drive. Once/if she comes back I will get her detailed as she is being gifted (again) to my wife for putting up with me.

TBH, on the infrequent time occasion I've driven past yours, it's still looked decent even if you've not washed it for 3 years!
Glad that times are looking better for you, at long last.
