Re: Engine oil RS4.
I dont think there are any issues to be aware of from not using 5w30 so why would you want to go to 5w40 unless track days?
Re: Engine oil RS4.
Hi Andy, hope your all OK?
Well it was more just hearing from others saying it helps with heat etc.
Maybe stick with vw 504 5w30- castrol??

Re: Engine oil RS4.
I would tbh although i would be interested to see what the other people think
Re: Engine oil RS4.
Since the car runs at 110 - 120 °C oil temperature, I run 5W40. Ever since I got the car.
More specifcally ROWE Hightech RS Synth 5W40. A lot of the RS4 and RS5 guys in Germany run this oil.
But its not long life! Max 8 - 10.000 km.

Re: Engine oil RS4.
I’ve just out shell helix 0w30 in because I read somewhere it’s thinner and therefore moves faster and cools better. I’m convinced my oil isn’t cooling correctly so thought I’d try it. FYI no difference that I could tell.

in my opinion.....
Youve got a few things to consider.
firstly and foremost what was the car designed for.
secondly what did the bean counters want (many modern cars are speced with thinner oil for emissions reasons.
what is your usage case.
lastly not all oils are created equal.
Re: Engine oil RS4.
I don't really see why anyone would want to change the oil spec from that recommended by the vehicle manufacturer of their specific car. The only need of varying the spec (again recommended by the car manufacturer) is in different climates where external air temperatures are taken into consideration.
The engineers that designed what no one can really argue against is a superb engine in the RS4, surely have given consideration as to the best oil for the engine, so
why would you want to go off other probably less informed advice?

Re: Engine oil RS4.
Has anyone got the spec of the shell helix audi seem to be recommending? Fancy trying it out next change
Re: Engine oil RS4.
going to need more details than that im afraid?
Re: Engine oil RS4.
The engine was designed in ... like 2009, for the RS5.johnnydog wrote: ↑Wed Jul 05, 2023 1:48 pmI don't really see why anyone would want to change the oil spec from that recommended by the vehicle manufacturer of their specific car. We have 2023. So technology has progressed by 14 years.
AFAIK I want to use the best liquids in such a rare fire breathing engine ... thus the change

Re: Engine oil RS4.
I have a 1969 Triumph for which the recommended engine oil was 20w/50. Despite modern engine oil having advanced in technology, I wouldn't even consider using a more modern spec oil in it, and the engine is the original and has not been overhauled or rebuilt at all in its 54 years. Not wanting create a debate about it, but I wouldn't consider changing the recommended RS4 oil either. But it's your decision obviously.

Re: Engine oil RS4.
I don’t think anyone in this thread is suggesting anything but Audi recommended oil.
The trouble lies in that Audi changes it’s recommended oil based on climate, and what they as a company can get a good deal on at any particular time.
As far as weight is concerned, I’ve seen 0w30, 5w30 and 5w40 all used and recommended. All are fully compatible. But that’s just the weight. You still need to find a Audi spec oil. Then take climate and use into account.
5w30 does seem to be the go to in the uk
