Flap delete, carbon clean & how to achieve a louder exhaust note without breaking the budget ?

Post by Adymars » Tue Jul 21, 2020 9:01 pm

Hi all. I would appreciate any advice. Still relatively new to owning the beast so still alot to learn. My son in law is a Porsche technician so having the work done is not the problem. Just wanted recommendations for kits available and also what the most effective solution for a better sounding exhaust without replacing the complete system. Cheers.

Ok my advice would be to head to MRC for a Flap Delete, Carbon Clean and Tune. They are basically the best in the business.

With regard to exhaust I have had the centre exhaust resonaotor removed on mine and replace with an X Pipe, any exhaust fabricator can do this for you for £100-£200.

I dont think you can really beat replacing the exhaust with a better sounding one. Miltek lead the offerings but theres a lot to choose from. Its worth the outlay as they are in my opinion better made and offer res and non res and from cat back to a fully system incl don pipes etc. Ive just had one fitted to my B5 and contemplating doing it on my B7. Not only do they sound better they look better.
Failing that as the guy says above, change the air filter put on an X pipe and remove the valve/flap etc makes a difference for those on a budget.
B7 RS4 - 07 Phantom, Silver leather, 59k. Current
B5 RS4 - 01 Avus, B7 Brake kit, Miltek cat back, Sroof, leather, optics. 66k. Current
B8 RS4 - Sepang, BO, Roof, Sports Sold
C5 RS6 + # 296 Ebony black, full optics, titans, carbon and natural leather - sold and missed
B7 RS4 Avant Daytona Pearl, black optics, SS+, buckets, privacy. Sold
B5 RS4 - MRC 420. Gone but not forgotten.

Thanks for that and yes I guessed a full or part system is the better way to go but other projects are limiting my budget big time. I am more concerned with failsafing the engine 1st. Have you ever come across an H pipe?? Apparently there is one available for the B7 that doesn't need welding and the exhaust valves still function. Its £330

I have H pipe, no difference to X pipe I'm pretty sure of that

By far your best value the money, Miltek is way overrated IMHO but I am sure there are plenty who will argue :bigblink:
With my black B7
I'm in B7th heaven
And with DRC
My ride is heavenly

Just get the centre res section cut out and replaced with two bits of the straight pipe. X-pipe will give you a slight gain in performance in theory but you will never notice it from behind the wheel.

Had this mod on my car for a few years now, best thing I have ever done to it. Honestly, it sounds wonderful with the valves fully open all the time.

Mikefish tried out loads of exhausts on his RS4 over the years when he had it and this was the setup he finally settled on.

Update on my original post. I've just had my car serviced by Ashton Mechanical Ltd in Mitcham. Ashleigh & Tony are great young lads Porsche trained so they had it all sorted in under 4 hrs. I also had the swirl flaps deleted in that time. Straight pipes in place of the centre res next. Then the Carbon clean .

Yep, I spent thousands and thousands on exhaust and centre resonator delete is what I ended up with.

Not the best videos but should give you an idea

Can't see anything on this one as I forgot to take the lens cap off!!

Whilst digging that video out I did find this, which was probably my favourite set up but not really workable on a daily driver (I kept getting pulled over for speeding, dangerous driving etc because they thought I was going faster than I was).

Mike Fish i would appreciate your thoughts and info/advice etc. After my flap delete one of the core plugs popped out and the bolt became loose. I had it recovered back to the gge and they are now saying to be 100% sure in this not happening again there is a method to make a new thread in the manifold and fit 16 bolts (see pictures attached). Extra over cost for this £450.

Sorry, I don't know enough about engines to comment in this. It looks like they a solution but I can't say if this is a good idea or not I'm afraid.
