Need to order new torque-converter today

Post by anditsoundslikebells » Fri Jul 10, 2020 12:40 pm

My car is with Teo @Teo Motorsport in Poland to have the transmission rebuilt and upgraded.
I'll give a full breakdown of what he is doing when it's all finished + the other places I found who could do similar.

The car is 2002 and at 146,000km, this is all original until now so well overdue.

Just got a call from Teo to say the torque converter is beyond saving and he will upgrade a new unit.

ZF don't supply them anymore so he is getting a quote from Audi. My fear is this sounds expensive.

Does anyone know of another option to source a new torque converter?

Is 90k miles considered to be a very good innings for the original box then? Mines coming up to that mark but feels strong, sounds good and no clocking (touch wood 👉🌳).

Mines on 77 and is solid as when I got it. Personally I feel the boxes are fine as long as you look after them as we all know. Services and not killing it in first or as it changes gear

These guys are good to deal with > https://jpat.co.uk/index.html

Sent mine off for recon about 4 years ago, it was beyond repair unfortunately but they supplied a "new" one for about half the price Audi wanted (TPS were £200+ more expensive than Stoke Audi  )....showing signs of wear now after approx. 20K miles of mostly daily driving but still pulls really well (and the TC does have to deal with 880Nm).

Recommended.

mine came with a dodgy tc as i only just bought it.
it was priced correctly and i figured i could rebuild it and uprate it and then be confident in it for years to come.
i'm hoping to source a new tc so that everything is as reliable as possible after the build.
i tried JPAT and they can't supply the part new or used.
i have 4 other companies that can rebuild these boxes i will share in the full write-up later.

if ZF aren't supplying these TCs anymore I guess this could be a headache for everyone in years to come!?

Is there not a company in Germany that provides uprated ones ? Seems daft to just fit another unit that is known to have issues.

I'm sure a few on here have mentioned this company before, but I can't for the life of me find the thread !

There are a few of firms in Europe & the US that "say" they offer upgraded TC's for the ZF 5HP, not sure how reliable they are tbf, but the problem is that they need a functioning TC to upgrade. As the OP suggests (and was my experience) the original may not be in a good enough condition to re-man, scrap effectively. If they're NLA from ZF then it seems we're all doomed....or there'll be a run on 01E 'boxes :(

I’m struggling to believe that the TC are NLA from ZF. A multitude of cars use that TC.

Scotty from Advanced Automotion in the US. Not cheap but you should get sorted there. Question as I have no idea, do the multitude of cars use exactly the same TC? Seems like the box is tweeked for the RS with a few small changes so why not the TC.

The box is slightly different. Reinforced this or that. I seem to remember that the TC is the same though. I’ll try to find the zf catalogue.

I'm confident Teo @ Teo Motorsport can upgrade/remanufacture a tc but the problem is mine has gone beyond the point of being usable. Teo builds the boxes for the Sportmile high bhp C6's and knows these boxes. Ricky Elder also recommended Teo, so I am confident he can achieve what I need.
The problem is getting my hands on one that isn't trash so he can do his work.
Like Shoppinit said, hard to believe that ZF can't provide them. I have spoken with ZF recently as they were potentially going to rebuild the box to standard spec but I decided to go with Teo.
Teo Motorsport is a ZF Partner so it doesn't bode well. Teo is now checking with Audi so let's see.

I don't know the specific part code so can't do my own digging.

But Audi gets them from ZF, so unless they've got some stock...

Maybe there is a specific part number for the RS6 but it could be the same as any other 5HP24A TC. Even if it's not rated for the power, you're upgrading it, right?

I'll email Teo and see if he can confirm the part number and ask ZF about 5HP24A.
