Radiator

Post by Gav66 » Wed Jun 17, 2020 6:10 pm

So just had the new bilstein on and now the radiator has sprung a leak.
Garage quoted £1100 for the new radiator...anyone bought one recently and do you have a price ???

Gav.

Same here. Apparently two options one is £550 if still available and second one is £1000.
Garage reckon they will destroy the hoses which also means a cooler is required.
Just waiting for go ahead to get mine done.
Hope this helps.

No mate sorry. Unit 20 doing mine for me. And sorry it’s took a while getting back to you. I was working on the car.
Ps mine was leaking about 1 litre every 2 weeks. At the moment no leakage ?
Will still get the work done for peace of mind.

Thanks Steve, mine leaked twice last year emptied the coolant bottle both times but only when I parked up.
Then twice this year same again i actually thought it was the bufkin pipe and purchased the alloy one ready for going in to the garage but they have looked it over and looks like it's the radiator, iam up in Scotland so unit 20 is a bit far for me but would love to take it down there and get a full check over when all this covid is out the way.
Thanks again for your time Steve.

No worries buddy. The problem is alloy fitting to steel. Oxidisation over time. When they try to undo the hose to rad coupling the threads will strip. Then they have to replace the hoses. Meaning they also have the same problem with the other end of the coolant hose. Hence new cooler.
Is nothing cheap on our pride and joy ?
Ps
I often have a stay over when I go to unit 20.
Approx 3 hours from me. Fantastic hotel with great food close by.

Had my radiator replaced a couple of months ago, £1000 just for the rad. All pipes came off ok, I think the entire bill was £1300.

G pat well done. I have worked on ally connected to steel for years. So I know where the garage is coming from. On a 17 year old car
As I would do- expect the worse and anything else is a bonus.

Radiator now fitted and garage says no problems with the hoses which is a bonus for me, new gear box seals done at the same time...waiting on the garage for the call to pick it back up once all the levels have been checked so Happy Days.

Been Thinking about this. When I had my timing belt done two years ago. The tech took a photo of the cooler to hose joints.
It was really badly oxidised and a slight weep.
Probably why mine needs the cooler and hoses as well as the radiator.
Guess I am just lucky !

Lol know what your saying steve.
Got mine back today, new radiator fitted and gearbox oil seals all done, £2450 all in. mechanic showed me the old unit and the fan had been slightly rubbing against it for god knows how long and finally wore into it causing a leak...he says shoddy work done previously.
Any now that its all done the A/C not working he has regassed the system but not holding the gas....could this be connected with new radiator going in or is it just a coincedence ???

Yes I went through a stage of fixing one problem and getting another. Very irritating.
I followed a members advice and made a sacrifice to the Audi gods.
Car runs really well. Just got to get a few gremlins sorted.
Where did you get the rad from ?
Very interested to know as my supplier is having a problem sourcing one.
Take care buddy
Regards Steve
