Production Model V10 Twin Turbo

Post by KWheeler » Tue Apr 28, 2020 11:27 am

Hi All,

I'm wondering if we can (or whether someone has already), determine whether the C6 V10 twin turbo is the officially manufactured (petrol) engine of it's type designed and built for road use?

I note the V10 engine was first engineered by a manufacturer for road use in the Dodge Viper and since then the following have been built (see below). Other than our unit, there does not seem to be a single turbo or twin turbo vehicle in petrol form.

Call me boring (my Mrs does!) but the idea of owning the only production car that has ever featured such a configuration gets me going...

Some of the first turbos for commercial use were on v10 diesel marine engines, but not sure about petrol motors.

Definitely rare enough, no matter how you slice it..

How's this for boring?

The V10 TT is definitely a minority / one off engine. Audi sold many more R8 V10's than they did RS6 V10's. Even Lamborghini did.

Even though the 4 litre, 4 cam, 4 valve twin turbo V8 is now the power unit of choice for every high end manufacturer, it's still a bit surprising just how many people make 12 cylinder turbos:

Aston Martin
Audi
Bentley
BMW
Mercedes
Rolls Royce

I believe all of them have out-sold the RS6 C6, and are still selling. Apart from the W16, that probably makes the V10 TT the rarest engine configuration of all.

Nick

Edit - I stand corrected, the VW Passat W8 engine is the most barking mad, rarest, configuration ever!
Edit - And the Phaeton naturally aspirated W12 close behind.

I still find it amazing that Audi made a 6L V12 Twin Turbo TDI for the Q7 - thats far more ludicrous to me than the RS6 engine!

Fairly sure I heard tell of an undercover police Passat wagon w8 here in Ireland before

Always thought that was pure madness as that kind of vehicle lol

There's also a couple of Phaetons still cruising around town. Our area has a ton of German heritage and I guess the cars came with them.
