Nice lesson. Thanks for sharing.
I wanted to clean up the brakes and measure the thickness of my discs as Audi had claimed they were 90% worn at last years inspection. Decided to take the discs off and rounded the small torx bolts at the front :x
Had to drill the buggers out. An hours job turned into many. Good news though as the front discs measured in at 35.0mm. I'm going to stop taking the car to Audi.

@jbourne where did you get your discs from?

Could you guys tell me how much life is left on these pads? I've got a set ready to go on which I may as well throw on when I get the tyres changed in the next few weeks if they're close to the wear limit.
Thanks

Those pads look pretty alive to me, maybe half worn? Maybe even less than half. I can post a pic of my brand new pads.

I got my rotors from CarParts4Less. Use one of their 17% off codes (_sometimes_ they run 18% but almost never, and 20% is a unicorn) so if you can get one of the 17% codes (and a lot of times they don't expire old codes... ahem), then that's about the best price you can get. They have stock right now, too.

The other alternative is AP Racing discs. If you plan on going through several rotors, AP Racing may be a much better choice as the initial investment is higher, but subsequently you just need the discs - the bell mounts remain the same, so the delta is a bit better. Plus they dissipate heat better, etc., so if you track extensively, those may be a better choice.

35.0 mm discs are half worn, and those pads even less so. Replacing half worn brakes is a common garage scam IMHO.

My rule of thumb is that each disc surface is allowed 1.0 mm of wear, and each pad is allowed 10 mm of wear.

Cheers guys.
That's shocking behaviour from Audi. And at the prices they charge! I wanted to maintain the full Audi history but screw them. The car and I will be better off at an indy specialist.

Wait let me see if I get what you're shocked about:

- Audi suggesting service you don't need
- Audi costing an arm and a leg
- an indie being more honest and well-priced

:bash:

:)

Where are you located btw? You should definitely go to an indie that has RS6 experience, considering what a ridiculous piece of dynamite this car is (and how many things are an "engine out" job). lol. Also, it sounds like you're well able to change the rotors/pads yourself, so you're probably OK there too!

Welcome to the Audi "Stealer" experience!

The vast majority of people on RS246, being enthusiasts, take their car to a specialist rather than trust Audi to touch it. There did used to be a few good Stealers with mechanics who knew RS6's really well (I think maybe 6 in total) but IIRC the vast majority of those mechanics left to either start their own garage or joined well known specialists.

Point taken.
I'm in Newcastle upon Tyne.
I've read good things about CM tuning in Leeds.
Any others I should consider?

Yeah that won’t be cheap. But then that’s the nature of these cars.

I would be interested. What's in the kit?

They are the ap 410mm discs and bells. Calipers with the spacer bracket. Calipers were fully rebuilt with some new pistons an all seals then painted to stock. Ds2500 pads.

That’s a pretty awesome kit. Why are you getting rid of it? Did you decide that brakes just needlessly slow you down? :)

Discs and bells - does that mean they're floating discs?
Are they stock calipers or AP calipers?
Are the calipers included in the kit?
Is it the same kit that Ian H has?
Many thanks,
Nick
