Audi smartphone carplay activation

That is a wireless adaptor for cars with Carplay already enabled / installed - not for the MY15 / MY16 that have the hardware but not the software.

I see there is now a wireless adapter for carplay, has anyone installed this? Think it is priced at £200 for the unit.

I wonder it works with other makes of cars? I assume it connects to the phone then just mimics a phone connected direct to USB so theoretically should work with any car that accepts car play through the USB socket.

Those who installed carplay and use Spotify, do you know if all character encoding on Spotify (encoding for kanji , big5, i.e Chinese or Japanese characters) show up correctly?

installed mine today... took a little more than 20 mins only due to 2 <beep> windows equipped laptops!! long live the MacBook!! all done and very good communication and info from the guy. talks you through everything and then once you pay he does one last thing and bosh all done!! well impressed

Wireless Car Play now set up on 2015 Facelift
After installing CarPlay as per this thread I thought I would take a chance and order a wireless car play dongle.

I bought it from Sweden. Think it was roughly £150.
Plugged it in, changed the language to English with one press of a button.
Searched for my Bluetooth on my phone and hey presto. CarPlay activated

Much more tidier without the connecting wire and more current setup.

Really happy with it.

I’ve read through this thread and I am confused as to the status of my car. I have a 2016 RS6 Performance, which does not have Apple CarPlay, it also just has two standard USB ports, not with the additional symbol next to one as shown in one of the Photos earlier in thread...

Can someone just help me out and explain what my car should have, and also what the official Audi process would be to activate CarPlay.

For 2016 cars it depends on you manufacture date. The cutoff is around May. Mine missed it by a week or so, so the MMI firmware was too old for Audi to do an official retrofit.

If you are later than this then Audi should be able to activate it. The physical hardware is the same on all facelift cars.

I used the Chinese chap who can remotely force upgrade the firmware and activate CarPlay, and it worked perfectly. He would be able to do this on newer cars too (just the activation and not the firmware) and I’m sure would be cheaper than Audi, but if you went Audi then at least it would be official. The activation is purely a software feature flag.

Thanks, that’s great, mine was registered in Nov 16, but as it doesn’t have the phone symbol by the USB slot I’m guessing it was built before the cut off...

I’ll see what Audi say, maybe I need to go down the route of the chinese gent, but not idea as don’t have windows laptop etc....

It was an option, so just wouldn’t have purchased with Audi SmartPhone interface. Audi would be able to retro-activate it.

Ok great, I bought it new so didn’t choose as an option (I can’t recall it being offered but maybe just didn’t look closely enough) but hopefully as you say Audi can just retro-activate.

I installed CarPlay from the guy from China and the wireless dongle works perfect.
