Issue with AMI disconnecting and reconnecting randomly..
Issue with AMI disconnecting and reconnecting randomly..
Hi all,
I have this intermittent issue with my AMI, basically it just disconnects and reconnects randomly.
So I connect my iPhone (via the AMI cable) and the music will start playing and then a minute later it will cut out, say its not connected and then reconnect straight away and continue playing. I did buy a new cable when I got the car but I think its a problem with the system and not the cable or connection.
When I wiggle the cable at both ends while the music is playing it continues to work fine, so its not a loose connection and it doesn't happen when I go over a bump, its purely at random intervals.
So it will do this at random intervals usually say every 5-10 mins.. however... I have noticed that it only seems to do this on the initial start of the car. So if I drive for 30mins it will disconnect and reconnect a number of times and then if I say turn off (to refuel for example), when I start the car again it will work absolutely fine with no disconnects\reconnects at all for that complete journey?
Just to add, everything else with the MMI seems to work fine, so no cutouts with any other system.
Bit annoying and any help appreciated.
Cheers,
Lig.

Hi Lig,
I always connect my iPhone using Bluetooth and have never had an issue. I'll try with the USB - phone cable. Is that the AMI cable?

Hi Chris and thanks for your reply...,
Yeah, it works fine with BT, but you get more functionality when connecting via the AMI cable (easier to view and navigate to playlists via the MMI screen) and it charges up your phone.
I have a specific cable that plugs into the AMI socket and then a firewire plug into the phone, so not a USB cable...
I am pretty sure its a standard 'socket' so all cars have them, but I could be wrong?!
this is the cable here....

Lig.

Keen to hear on this as mine does the same. Bought a new lead also as thought the other was dodgy.

Have you tried carrying out an MMI reset? Can't remember the button combo but google it and you'll find it.

hi Mike,
Yeah tried that. But thanks. Maybe I will do it again...

Re: Issue with AMI disconnecting and reconnecting randomly..
Quick update on this....
I had an interesting conversation with a chap at Huntindon Audi as I was thinking of buying another cable... however he advised that because of the age of the car (64 plate) the system will have only been tested\compatible with up to iPhone 7, so it could be that its my phone, being an 8 that is not 'compatible'... I think this is a valid point (as he could easily have said yes buy a new cable @ £50).
As luck would have it, I have an old ipod Nano (7th Gen) just laying in a box... So I am going to try this and see if I have the same problems. Bit of a pain as I will have to sync this separately, but up side is that I can just leave it in the car...
I will let you know the outcome.
Cheers,
Lig.

Re: Issue with AMI disconnecting and reconnecting randomly..
Or just put all your music on a SD card or harddrive. Easy peasy. Why use the nano at all?
Re: Issue with AMI disconnecting and reconnecting randomly..
Yeah, that's a valid point....
So without getting too technical.... ho hum... Is it easy to transfer music from iTunes to an SD card AND when on the SD card does it have them stored as playlists etc so you can navigate to a playlist or Album easily from the MMI? If it is easy then yes this is deffo something I will look into ... But if it just stores all the songs together then I like the idea and the organisation of the Playlists on the Nano and possibly easier to resync when new music added than re-copy to SD?????!!!!.

Re: Issue with AMI disconnecting and reconnecting randomly..
I have all mine on a USB memory stick direct copy off iTunes.
MMI displays them as Artist > Album > song and the controls work fine for scrolling and finding things.
Don't personally use playlists but could easily be set up as an "artist" with each subset as an "Album" I guess and then just copy the songs in there.
Try it and see!

Re: Issue with AMI disconnecting and reconnecting randomly..
I have all my songs stored in folders and navigate that way. I hate iTunes.
Re: Issue with AMI disconnecting and reconnecting randomly..
Just to close a thread....
I have had my old iPod connected now for the last couple of weeks with zero issues.
So I think it could be a problem with newer technology connected to the dated AMI system. Maybe it is possible to update the software I don't know??
It would be interesting to hear if anyone is using there AMI port successfully with any phone newer than an iPhone7...
I will just continue to use my iPod AMI and iPhone for bluetooth call connectivity...
