Oil Pressure Warning
Oil Pressure Warning
Guys,
Was leaving Torquay yesterday, and I had the red Oil light Come on and three beeps, so I pulled off the road, and eventually got it recovered home to Taunton (7hours later)
Had it recovered to mums as that’s where the AA account is registered too, and I tentatively drove the couple of miles home, with no further issue.
I know there could be issues like oil pump, blocked pickup ,faulty OP Switch, or a split pipe/etc.
It drove fine on the way down, and did 150 mile round trip the day before.

Re: Oil Pressure Warning
Did you check the level?
Be extremely surprised if you had blocked pipes or pick-ups unless your car has never been serviced.

Re: Oil Pressure Warning
Mine has come on once or twice in my ownership, but it's oil level ? Not pressure ?
All I have done is a small top up and I never see it again.
Anyone know how much oil the C5 uses anyway ?

Re: Oil Pressure Warning
Level appears to be fine.
I’ve driven it since and it hasn’t come back on. But I’m going to take it in to the garage and get it checked out, just for peace of mind.

Re: Oil Pressure Warning
Recommend you fit an oil pressure gauge. That and a boost gauge are prime diagnostic tools.

I’m not a fan of having gauges on the dashboard in stock cars. Reminds me of the Chavvy boy racers having various gauges in their Saxo’sIchBautAuto wrote: ↑Sun Oct 13, 2019 11:06 amRecommend you fit an oil pressure gauge. That and a boost gauge are prime diagnostic tools.

Re: Oil Pressure Warning
You're perfectly entitled to take that track. My view as an engineer and after some thought, is that there are two engine parameters that require monitoring in real time for these cars, oil pressure and boost. You can see at a glance if either of your fundamental parameters are not in spec and neither are monitored in real time by the car and visible to you.
I tried the podi system in my RS4 and didn't like it. I then relocated the gauges to the far right on the dash. They are invisible to any casual glance but right in the eye line when watching the road. The mount system I used makes no changes to the car and can be reverted with no impact. You can also mount gauges in the vents, use a P3 gauge setup, a liquid gauge in the vent, a colour DIS and the options go on. I have the colour DIS, waiting to fit it, I have a liquid gauge in the RS4 and I have a P3 gauge that I will fit in the RS6.
The RS4 and the RS6 have many similarities and common issues that impact performance. Like you, I wouldn't want a series of gauges stuck just anywhere but I feel that there is certain information that any technically savvy person would want to have available and this is an acceptable way to do so.

Re: Oil Pressure Warning
Booked in the garage for Monday, they’ll pressure test it, and replace what’s necessary

Re: Oil Pressure Warning
So yesterday it went into the garage, and it had a replacement switch, a flush, and an oil & filter change.
However, since the light came on, I’ve driven it 3 times, and it hasn’t come back on. So potentially it was a dying switch. Also discovered the last garage didn’t tighten the clamps on the OS lower boost pipe.
I’ll see if the problems been cured when it does a 40 mile trip later today.

Re: Oil Pressure Warning
While I fitted the analogue gauges in my RS4, I'm going with a RS4 style P3 gauge in the RS6. Much less obtrusive in that style car. For mine if you have a level of technical skill then some unobtrusive diagnostics are invaluable.

Re: Oil Pressure Warning
So update:
Took it on an approx 90 mile round trip yesterday.
It performed without issue. Fingers crossed it was a dodgy switch or some other minor issue.
I do have both rocker covers leaking badly (yet one was replaced 4 months ago - or so I thought) next job is to replace them.

Re: Oil Pressure Warning
Glad it seems to have fixed the issue. Rocker covers leaking shouldn't affect oil pressure, but they often blow onto the exhaust manifold with smokey/smelly results. They also don't seem to last that long (even proper Audi ones). I've done mine twice in 7 years and one was done by the garage when I bought it. Think they just get so hot that the gasket isn't up to it.
