Hi all,

My name is Sam, I live in Wiltshire and I am owned by 4 dogs and a wife!!

Now that we know each other here is my quandary,

I currently own a so so C6 RS6, usual bits miltek remap etc etc. When I purchased the car I thought to myself, be smart, be sensible, this is a twin turbo V10, its you, it’s 100% going to to go wrong at some point, pay for the extended warranty (second hand car btw) so me being sensible I did. Now I’m pretty sure when I bought it the dealer stated it was FSH although I cannot confirm this and being a 12 year old at heart it wasn’t top of my priority list tbh, more fool me.

Anyway 20 months of extremely content ownership the inevitable happens, something goes wrong.

Symptoms:

Blue smoke on pull away and full throttle.

Drove the car regularly until I ‘invested’ in a cheap runaround so that my esteemed wife didn’t have to pay £100+ a week in fuel to get work, so RS sat for a while, approx 2 weeks. Started up after sitting for this period, steam, first thought HG, then comforted myself thinking that it was just the angle of the back box and the fact we had had a particular wet two weeks. Drive down the road, thinking it will clear, and that it did, to a lovely shade of blue! Instant thought turbo seals, happy days I thought, you were smart and got a warranty, well done me!!

Trucked car to local VW/AUDI specialist who concurred with my amateur prognosis, perfect.

Remove engine, (yay cos that’s a 5min job ) remove turbo send away for diagnosis.

In the interim, propose, forgoes stag do, get married, pay for above, then take on 14day road trip around Europe for honeymoon, (which was epic, I have the tattoo to prove this) come home, expect car and garage to have communicated efficiently to resolve issue...

Really what are you thinking you muppet! You knew when you bought this car s**t will always go sheets to the wind, never be the optimist, you’re always disappointed, pessimist, not so much!!!!

So for anyone that can and has been bothered to trawl thru this tripe, the outcome is as follows, speak to garage, they gave feedback from warranty company saying that the turbo is ok I’ve read the report that states that everything is salvageable except the wastegate, which apparently is a non replaceable part. Now I should put the pre cursor in place that the warranty T&C’s stipulate that they will only REPLACE and NOT REFURBISH any parts. So ok chances are that, in my limited knowledge, I believe that every turbo is rebuildable, so why bother taking the time to refer it to a specialist!?! Anyway report comes back that everything within the turbo is ‘SALVAGABLE’ except the wastegate, which is marked as SCRAP..... Sooooo ok take it on the chin and except the diagnosis that the turbo is not at fault and the finger is now pointed at the breather system, OK.

Now forgive me for being sinacle/naive, on the report it states the wastegate is SCRAP so, I speak to the warranty guys to clarify this where I am greeted with this response,

‘Yeah the wastegate is perishable, just like a wheel bearing, they wear out with time’

Me : ‘OK I get that, can’t it be replaced?’

Them : ‘No it’s a non refurshibale item’

Me : ‘So it’s not replaceable, so that renders the entire unit scrap? Right?’

Them : ‘No it’s a perishable, like a wheel bearing...’

Me : ‘Ahh right, OK so then it can be replaced?’

Them : ‘No, it’s non refurbishable.’

Me : ‘So nithing like a wheel bearing then, so the entire unit is scrap then?’

Them : ‘No..’

Arrrrrgggghhhhhhh is just me being a tool or does that not make sense!?!

So on to today I think I have come to the realisation that I may aswell employ a chocolate fire grate than rely on any kind of recourse from the warranty company, so my question is this.....

£10k what should I do!?!

I’ve had a brief chat with Ricky from RE who by the way seems extremely grounded and realistic, who suggested

Upgrade IC’s
Water Injection
Rebuild STD Turbos
Upgrade Downpipes
Remap
Replace bits such as oil o ring, rocker gaskets etc etc
Sure there was another couple of bits I’m missing,
I also wanted to renew discs and pads all round and aim for 800hp, am I realistic or pie in the sky!?!

Your in good hands if you speaking to Ricky at REP, he knows his stuff around these. He was the only one to work on mine.

You can deal with warranty companies and get them to do what their Ts & Cs say but you have to be very patient, stubborn, pragmatic, iron-willed and stoic of their effect upon you. I've done it. I wouldn't do it again. I now run a slushfund.

Unfortunately I possess very few of those qualities!! I have sent the turbo away for a second opinion but as Ricky said if they’ve already stripped the unit down then all the evidence has been disturbed. So not quite sure where I’ll stand on that one.

Slush fund sounds like a sensible way forward.

Yeah pretty sure the stock turbos will do over 800hp and the stock block is good for 1000hp. I think the issue is the torque figure and gearbox.

I’m looking for something that’s still driveable and super reliable. It’s only going to be used on occasion for road trips etc, with 4 dogs in the boot.

The 10k budget is hopefully including new discs and pads and any else that crops up, which I know it will!!

Pretty sure I remember MRC telling me you won't get more than 800hp from stock turbo's.

I've had 3" downpipes, full custom exhaust, sports air filters, MRC engine and gearbox remap. Got 770ps 1100 nM.

Doug said he was slightly disappointed with the ps but that I got good nM.

had car 4 years, no problems so far....touch wood.

My partner has a Husky. A BIG husky which won't lie down in a car. Not only do Huskies appear to shed their coats 24x7x52 but their coats are slightly greasy too which means after even a short trip the should-be-black boot interior is white (even with a cover) and I can't see through the rear windows.

Just a quick one re IC’s. What’s the benefit of the uprated units? From what I read the overall volume of OEM and aftermarket a pretty similar. Are the a/m cores more efficient/free flowing or is it more about robust end tanks to hold increased boost reliably? IIRC when I was speaking to Ricky he said something about retaining std cores??
