What's up with the ZF 8 speed tiptronic Graeme?
Obviously you live with yours so have a better perspective.
In theory this should make the ZF even more appealing as a torque converter gearbox offers better refinement (smoother shifts) in traffic and when moving off from stationary.
It's not as quick to shift down or up as the DSG box. You get used to it, but it's still not as good.
I've often bounced it off the limiter where I've hit the up paddle and that delay of half a second or so is the difference between the perfectly timed shift and momentarily hitting the limiter before the shift. It's not that it's bad, as it's comparable to the M and AMG boxes, but still not as good as the DSG box both going up or down.
On the flip side, the low down torque of the new FI engine means you don't need to go down 23 gears every time you want to overtake, so this negates some of the downfalls of the ZF.
As for whether it changes more smoothly in day to day driving, I can't say I ever had a problem with the DSG in D mode
The S mode in the ZF is miles better though if you want to be pushing on a bit, but not having the box sit at 7k rpm everywhere. I appreciate it's a 'learning' box, but my driving's remained the same, and the ZF boxed has learnt it better, if that makes sense
