Tyre choices
Tyre choices
Your thoughts?
Mine'll be due for replacement this year - they feel decidedly second-hand in terms of ride quality even though tread and grip are still good - I only do about 5k miles p.a.
I though the OEM Continentals rode badly (but acknowledge they may have come a long way in 11 years).
Pirellis tended to follow cambers quite a lot, and needed warming up for proper front end bite.
I've used Goodyear Eagle Asymmetrics for the last few sets and find that they have few weaknesses. Most importantly, they always feel grippy from the off, whether it's warm, cold, wet or dry. I would miss this if I lost it by changing.
I gather the latest Eagles have not fared so well in tyre tests, and that Michelin's Pilot Sport 4 seems to win most group tests. Anyone use them and have any thoughts, particularly when it comes to front end bite as soon as you turn a wheel, regardless of weather? I know other people who've said that they are good in this respect, but none of them drive a B7 so I thought I'd ask people who do!
Cheers.

Re: Tyre choices
^ I have MPSS on two cars (both 19’s) and MPS4’s (18’s) on another. Both are brilliant tyres. When I need to replace the SS I will replace with MPS4S’ as all tests seem to say they are as good as SS but slightly better in the wet.
Re: Tyre choices
I'm afraid I fall in the camp of 'other people' as I have experience with the tyres you mentioned but on other cars! That said, I think the Michelin PS4 fits your needs quite well, they are considered better than that Goodyear Eagle F3s, and I can vouch that the PS4 has great grip in dry/wet from cold.
I've got Michelin Pilot Sport 3s on my newly purchased RS4 and I'm keen to get rid of them! I'll be going with PS4S soon but I don't think that would give you the cold grip you are after.

The continental sportcontact 6’s have got good reviews, but don’t seem to be a common choice for some reason. I thought the last iteration were good tyres, especially in the wet.
I’m on MPSS now - no complaints.

Re: Tyre choices
I am using Continental Sport Contact 6 and in on my second set. Really like them, good grip from cold and worked very well on nurburgring aswell on my RS4 (and there i had lower load index then recommended). Don’t really have so many tyres to compare against but the Conti SC 6 is a really good tire!

Re: Tyre choices
I've just come off Pilot Super Sports onto Pilot Sport 4s. Two main reasons being the PS4 won the Evo tyre test again and that Black Circles were doing really good deals. No complaints so far.....

Re: Tyre choices
Michelin Pilot Super Sports on mine at the moment, I had Conti's, Vreds and Dunlops and find these are the best. The PS4's weren't out when I bought mine, so will go for PS4's next time round. I've got PS4's on my E36 M3 and rate them highly

RS4 B7, Mugello Blue, K&W V3 & HR ARBs, set up by Centre Gravity, Milltek Valved Non Res & cat bypass pipes, BMC air filter, braided hoses, DOT 5.1, Terraclean, MRC Full Carbon Clean, MRC remap 448PS 477NM, 20" S7 alloys with 4mm spacers & Hawke spigots 66.6 > 57.1, AP Racing front discs. Sold Sept 2019. Now rocking an F80 M3

Re: Tyre choices
I had two sets of Sessantas. They looked brilliant and were ace in the wet but fairly shocking in the dry.
Loved the Super Sports but when the tread got low the performance seemed to go off a cliff.

Re: Tyre choices
Anyone tried Yokohama AD08 19x255x35 ? its Semi-slick road legal track tyre, Mind blowing sticky in the dry with very little to none attention attracting screech, and fairly decent in the wet for a semi-slick, i thought as good as the contis. The only kicker is they are just slightly under spec for this car weight wise. But unless you plan to be doing 190 mph with 4 passengers and a boot full of suitcases (maybe your late for a flight!) then i don't think its anything to worry about.
They can be found for around £160 a corner so if its sheer grip at a good price your after take a look at these.

Re: Tyre choices
^ yeah great track day tyre. I won’t want To use them on a road car really though, too much compromise.
Re: Tyre choices
I'm currently running the Yoko"s on mine as I took my wheels off to get them refurbed.Once warmed up I find them nice and sticky and adequate in the wet.

Re: Tyre choices
Once they get to about 1.5 mm they get quite slippy even in the dry. Good fun though. Mine got illegal in December so i put on a set of winters i had. Pretty glad i did given the weather we had this year. Got away with it the last two years.
Re: Tyre choices
This is interesting - PS4 vs PS4S vs Cup 2:

Went for the PS4Ss in the end. Ride not as good as the Goodyears, but stronger in every other respect. Especially when dealing with lateral and longitudinal loads at the same time.

Iv drove cars with PS4s and cup 2’s and there is a huge difference
