Latest Mod

Post by gorwanvfr » Wed Oct 11, 2017 7:52 pm

My wife's Q7 has illuminated door sills and I must say I love the look of them. Once I realized that the C7 Rs6 had them too it set me thinking. :biggrin3:
First part was to get my hands on a set of C7 Rs6 door sills. ebay
Second rather than butcher my original sills trying an idea that maybe would not work. I decided to get a secondhand set of A6 sills from ebay.

Third cut the illuminated inserts from the C7 sills

Now the fun started joining the two together

All in I would say €150ish the paint and filler I already had.
The c7 sills are the hard to get cheap. There is a small mark on one of the sills I got but for the price it was a no brainer.
I think at the minute there is a set and the seller is looking for €500 :bash:

Yeah that's a lot. Not sure if I have the skills to make them. Unless you'd do it for a price 🤘

Where did you take the power from?

Do they dim with the rest of the interior lighting?

Power is taken from the puddle lights in each door. Extra work to get the power from the puddle lights but did not want them illuminated when the doors are closed.

You could also take the power from the footwell lights

If you use the footwell lights for power, then at night when the footwells are on, the sills will be illuminated even when the doors are closed. By using the door puddle lights the sills are only illuminated when the door is open. I did think of the footwell lights and did try connecting to the rear ones but when I tried, the module under the seat got a bit upset.
Looking at the illuminated part of the sills there does not appear to be much of a heat sink for the LEDs. I'm guessing there are LEDs in there so I'm not sure how they would handle being powered for long periods.

Blindly. Looks like you ruled that one out then lol. How hard was it to route the wires to the puddle lights? I found the door cards are a pig to remove.

No I ran three 0.8mm wires under the new sills up to the front of the car and then in through the rubber wiring harness. Drilling the sill of the car won't get you to the inside of the car. Hope that makes sense. I'm guessing by your questions your planning the same mod.
