Looking for an B7 RS4; What to look out for and some questions

Post by Gibbo205 » Tue Oct 10, 2017 12:59 pm

Hi there

OK some may recognise the forum name from Overclockers UK, yes its the same me. :)

Now I am selling my 2016 highly modified Mustang GT 5.0 to make way for a new MY18 arriving Spring/Summer next year. In the meantime I will need another car to accompany my track focused E46 M3, I was thinking of another EVO X but as I've owned one before and yes it was fantastic a good friend of mine, Housey who may or may not be on here recommended an RS4, something I had forgotten about even though he gave me the keys to his and I gave him the keys to my EVO X. As such it makes better sense to grab an RS4 as I've never owned one before.

Now I've being looking through all the adverts and it seems around 15k will get me quite a nice car, I don't mind a high miler by the way, just want a car that drives good and is a saloon, for me mileage is not an issue as long as it has FSH and problems have being dealt with.

Now the questions I have:

1. What to look / check for on a check over the car and a drive, either as passenger or driver.
2. I see so many cars have Bilstein coilovers, due to some DRZ issue with stock shocks. Now this is an issue for me because what makes the RS4 fantastic is its ability on a wet British B road as the stock shocks are quite compliant, my experience with cheap coilovers is you loose the compliance and thus wet road holding ability, I want the car to handle and ride like stock, I do not want it firmer or harsher, so how do the Bilstein compare for ride comfort and grip on a wet road?
3. Tyres, do these car love PS4s and MPSS like other cars, or is there another favoured tyre of choice, also what is the stock tyre size?
4. I see all cars seem advertised as carbon cleaned, this says to me this is not done and just advertising. How much for a good clean?
5. Gutting stock pre-cats, worth it?

That is it really, Ideally just want a clean stock car, high miles is fine. :)

£15k is the bottom end of the market...i bought one last year...viewed near 10..and only 1 was in good condition body wise..and had good service record..

I still ended up spending a fair bit

Some are common issues...due to the age of the car if it still has drc suspension..it will start leaking at some point...as they just get rusty and give up over time...

I was quoted £800 per shock..one leaked...so decided on coilovers as they others will go sooner or later.. drives spot on

front Brakes...expensive...thinl £1200 From a dealer...i paid £800ish in the end.

carbon clean...never had it done...from reading here...costs near £1k...and the carbon will just build up again..

control arms...comon with age if not changed will need doing at soms point...it was near £600 but costed an aditional £800 as my wishbones broke in the process...common problem.

I'll be short in my answers :)
1) the usual checks one might do when buying a car. Specific to Rs4 are: 5.5k revs kick.
Oil cooler pipes.
Seat bolsters,
Exhaust flaps.
Brake discs
2) b14 are just as good as DRC.
3)yes and yes
4)£600ish for a clean. Only lasts 6ish months. Ask for receipt.

And to Add:
Rs4 is a lot more car than EVO!
Ps. Avants are faster ;)

Pss. MikeFish is selling his. Trust me when I say this, you won't find better car on here at the moment

Psss. 15k is a little low for a good example.

carbon clean not a biggie-its 20bhp if that-a page on here has it at 16-17bhp difference
its issues not apparant on a normal inspetion that can bite-you wont see the oil cooler pipes unless front undertray/bumper removed
clutch pedal sticking down when very hot and car is getting used to its max-thats a large bill
pins sticking in the front calipers-usually on a car that has been used gently and had pads in for a while-real bitch to remove
as mentioned in post above-the upper arm pinch bolts seize-if they dont come out its £230 ish a side for a pattern upright when you want to change an upper arm-and its as well to do the wheelbearing at same time too.
look for spec if it bothers you-not all have auto lights and wipers, not all have centre armrest[easily retro fitted though] most dont have heated rear seats
some have a sunroof[biggie for me tbh] i"m a fan of the comfort seats, but most like the buckets[the buckets certainly look better]
miltek exhaust is good but i found the non res too boomy so swapped out the centres for resonated
check camber even both sides on front as its only adjustable by punting the subframe across[most are uneven]
get a proper scan of vehicle done too-that may unearth some faults
stock tyres 255/35/19 i run 275/30[fitted by previous owner]

avants are certainly faster

Thanks guys.

OK to confirm.
1. Floor it in 2nd say 3000rpm and at 5500rpm it should pull noticeable harder?
2. Press sport button at idle to see if flaps open and exhaust goes louder?
3. Bilstein coilovers are fine and ride as well as working DRC?
4. Request a long test drive or passenger ride and pay attention to see if clutch is sticking?

Anything else I have missed?

dont let anybody kid you on about coilovers-they are firmer and less refined than drc[plus lower even on highest setting] a slightly more "jittery" ride but i find it acceptable and i hate over firm suspension
dont get distracted by the flaps-most folk blank off the vac pipes and run with the valves open-many cars are equipped with miltek etc without valves-its a non issue for me anyway and very simple to resolve
do pay attention to the clutch and oil cooler etc could be 4k for those two repairs alone-a heavy clutch pedal shows an older clutch, new clutches are fairly light and nice to use-my car appeared to have has recent cooler pipes-so i smeared the bit that corrodes with grease to prolong their life[the shrouds/nuts] have heard of many methods inc densotape

I recently bought one for just under 15k and would argue whilst it is at the lower end of the market it doesn't necessarily mean it'll be a bad car. Mine has done 115k miles and was the highest mileage out of all the ones I looked at it. The lower mileage ones that I viewed actually drove worse so don't believe all the hype that you need to by a low mileage one. In the last 40k miles it's had a lot of work including full drc changed (bill for 3.8k from audi) , clutch and flywheel, oil cooler , brakes, front suspension arms and looks like one aux radiator has been done as well. Drive a few and go on condition and history. I drove one with 30k less miles and price was 2.5k more. Brakes were shot and exhaust valves seized and it had budget tyres!

Don't suppose there is anyone in Midlands (Stoke / Congleton) area with an RS4 here in what is considered good condition who would be happy to give me a ride, you drive, I passenger so I can get a good idea of how a good one should ride and well accelerate? Just means when I take some for test drives I know what to listen out for suspension wise and what to expect when flooring it. :)
