If you're talking about the C6 then yes those figures are the reality! Average for me was around 16mpg but the average for me in the C7 is around 27/28 if not more on a long run. Giving it the beans obviously I get less but that's life in a V8. I have zero regrets on the C6/7 they were/are epic cars and I've loved owning them.
This year I came from a long time contracting to FTE and have had to come to terms with earning the same wage month in month out. Gone (for now) are the £10k + months! Hence the desire to save money more now. I'd rather have some more cash in my back pocket to spend/invest than having it tied up in a depreciating asset. Pretty common thing when you think about it-people want more economy nowadays from performance cars, the new S4 matches the performance figures for the outgoing RS4. Granted the RS will be more focused and a keener drive but the gap is narrowing and I want more bang for my buck. It's getting that balance between a great drive and half decent economy for me. Pretty much sold on AWD or I'd go back to M cars (M4's are £30/40k now) and I don't miss fighting for traction all the time.

I know it's rear wheel drive but I have driven the Alpina D3 and it's astonishingly good. Heaps of torque, silky ride, good handling and 40+ to the gallon. I was seriously tempted but don't do the miles these days to worry too much, but if I did then I would probably have opted for one.

It's got a buyer who's put a deposit down and currently waiting for the final go ahead from his finance firm and then (all being well) it's gone. Will give full details when it goes as I don't want to jinx it!
As for what's next...been a really tough choice. Where do you go from the RS6 when you want cheaper and yet still has AWD?
New RS3 still too much.
Am looking at getting into a used facelift A45 AMG. Half the car but (literally) half the price!

Will miss the Audi tech (no one can touch the virtual cockpit currently) and I nearly went for S3/4/5 but the A45's are a bit of a rarity and also quite lairy. I need something exciting after two RS6's and whilst the A45 doesn't have half the power and thrust of the RS it's in the same post code and in the bends it will be full on and there are lots of B roads where I live.
PLUS (and it's a big plus) the one I'm hopefully getting into means all told I'll be saving at least £600 per month which was the whole object of this saga!

Good call re the A45, with the right bits (exhaust etc) they are a decent hooligan. They are great value for money secondhand.
If its any value given this is an Audi forum the MB new lease fleet is disposed of through BCA (British car auctions, Blackbushe etc) at the end of the contract. They dispose of them on behalf of MB at quite cheap prices through the auction. My old E63S Estate went well below book to a stealer. They are generally 20k miles fully maintained and in decent condition.

Mercedes dealer had lined up a Yellow Night Edition with all the right trimmings (Dynamic Plus Pack which gives adjustable dampers plus front sports diff) and switchable sports exhaust etc. That was £46k with discount (originally £51k) but brand new. One am looking at is a facelift 65 plate with 9k on the clock and all the trimmings for £35,200 so a big difference.

ive just ordered a BMW 335d xdrive m sport. 4.8 to 60 and given its rear wheel bias its alot of fun to chuck about. Spoke to DMS and a remap/intake and exhaust is looking at a sub 4s to 60, but with potential for over 50mpg. Best station car i could think of :)

The A45 will be going in for tuning and DMS is a good shout. There's a LOT of pish out there about tuning boxes and what they can achieve (450 bhp etc) where the bottom line is the A45 only has a 2 litre 4 cylinder engine and it's highly tuned as it is. Check out YouTube and you'll find guys boasting about 450 race chipped A45....right up until they do drag racing against the new RS3 and TTRS which both leave him for dead. 'No replacement for displacement' as they say. I'd expect around 400-410 bhp max from a normal tune.
I'd also say traction wise 4Matic and XDrive are never going to be as good as Quattro. There's always a power transference between the different wheels to find traction on the Mercedes and BM cars and whilst quick it's not as quick as dedicated AWD from the get go. The CarWow video featuring the RS3 against most of the Hyper/Hot Hatch rivals was pretty telling:

RS3 has exactly the same AWD Haldex as the golf and the Merc.

You could get a 2015 RS3 for the same price point, and I would've thought the RS would have better residuals. Arrange finance through a 3rd party broker?

Even a 2014 RS4 would be attainable at that price.
