Bolts anyone??

Post by Daveperc » Tue Jul 18, 2017 3:29 pm

OK - at recent service at MRC it was evident that my trusty GY F1's were still making contact with where "El Knobbo" used to be. Pressures were fine, and El Knobbo is definitely no longer there!

I decided to fit 5mm spacers all round to solve the problem -but MRC only had one set of spacers and extended bolts in stock so we could only do the fronts.

I now want to do the rears to match, and have had no problem tracking down the spacers - but I can't seem to find the bolts anywhere!! They are H&R 1453503, or Ball Seat Wheel Bolt - M14x1.5x35mm (silver). I can find them in Europe or US, but not in UK.

Anyone got some (I've emailed Virdee but not had a response), or alternatively anyone offer me a ECP part no or similar, please!

Thanks

Dave

Hold on, 5mm spacers are a bad idea. Here's why: they won't be hub-centric and the hub spigot is too short to ensure wheel centering on 5mm spacers... ask me how I know...

You'll need 8mm at least, but 10mm look best on the RS6.

What's the standard thread length? I seem to remember them being 27mm. There's not a lot of space behind the hub for the bolts to protrude without hitting something IIRC.

ask me how I know...
- OK, I asked!!

However, MRC seemed quite happy fitting the 5mm ones, and there was no interference with 35mm bolts. I would generally reckon that there'd be more clearance on the rears....

Thanks for the link

Cos I put some on. Seemed fine at first, then after a few hundred miles I started getting a really weird vibration that would come and go in waves. Traced it to the wheel not being centered properly. There is a big chamfer on the centre ring of the wheel and the hub spigot was only just catching the edge of the chamfer. It eventually wore a radius on the chamfer edge and I was no longer getting proper wheel centring.

Hmmmm - OK - since I have already got the spacers I think I'll run with them and see how I get on (Reminder to self to check bolts in a couple of hundred miles to make sure they are still tight.)

The good news I guess is that if I go for 8mm spacers later the bolts will still be long enough!!

Thanks for the info!

Sorry to point this out... but... (this is my understanding of it... that's all ;) )

The wheels are centered on the wheel bolt head and recess design in the wheels rather than on the spigot itself.

The spigot is simply there to allow you to line up the wheel bolts easily.

Once you have torqued the wheel bolts up fully, the centering spigot performs no function whatsoever.

When torquing up wheel bolts/nuts, I would always suggest a 'star' pattern to ensure that the wheel is centered as much as possible... call it being 'mechanically nice' to the system :biggrin3:

Without the spigot the car would be resting on the bolts. No thanks.

I strongly dispute this.

Personal experience has also shown me that the spigot is vital in centering.

Some spigot rings are plastic as well, therefore I would hope they are a non load bearing item
