How bad is the theft problem?

Post by MPS » Mon May 29, 2017 9:51 am

I sold my C63 estate last week and am looking for its replacement which I've shortlisted to the C7 RS6, F85 X5M or Cayenne Turbo - should I find a facelift around the same budget.

The RS6 is top of my list, but what puts me off are the stories of robbery, house break-ins and being followed home. How common are these problems?

My C63 used to attract a lot of attention from boy racers, I thought the RS6 might be more discrete, but reading the stories on here, it appears it may not be.

Thanks.

Judge by your premium. Mine is less than £400 a year for the 6. A guy on Pistonheads just saved £200 a year by switching from RS4 to 6. It is the lowest premium for a high performance car I have ever had (and lucky enough to have had a few).
Just don't buy one if you live in or near Birmingham ;)

As above, can really depend where you live and how much attention you try and get while out and about in it.
previous- Pug 205 gti, 306 gti, 309 gti Goodwood.
Audi S3, S4 V8 avant.
Porsche Macan Turbo.
Gone but NEVER forgotten - C5 RS6 Misano red avant.

Now - Empty garage

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there!

Don't think that the Midlands area is isolated in being a vehicle crime hotspot (although I would avoid buying a car there as it's a renowned dodgy area), someone published an official 'most stolen' list on here and the RS6 didn't even feature (to the surprise of most on here). You don't see many RS6's on the roads and of course you will hear about thefts on here. It's worse on BMW forums with reports of the M135/140 etc being a favoured target for theft. It's the same anywhere-if you have nice stuff there's always going to be scumbags who will want to take it off you! Lots of good advice on these boards about how to reduce the risk of theft...if you want to eliminate it then go buy a 'normal' car but even then they can get nicked! Buy one, take some sensible security precautions and don't disappear up your own ar5e in paranoia about thieves lurking everywhere and enjoy the car!

My insurance for the RS6 was a more than the E63S and CL600 just for reference. I also had to have a tracker which I did not on the others.

I did not feel worried when going about my daily runs in the car. It got a few looks from people who could differentiate an RS from a normal model but they are generally admiring.

What happened when I put it up for sale was something I never want to repeat.

I'd have a RS6 again "BUT" only if I wasn't living in birmingham and I had a bigger garage. I'd defo stick a Clifford Blackjax on it and 2 trackers(1 hidden extremely well and a dummy one in the usual dumb places)

Just be aware the tracker tactic works both ways and a current tactic for criminals to use would be to stick their own lump on your vehicle and then that saves them following you home. Trackers are becoming cheaper and cheaper nowadays.

Re the stolen stat, it wasn't stolen, it was recovered. That's only part of the story.

This is what happened to me. The week before it got stolen there were hand marks on my wheels. My guess was they'd used a wheel to hoist themselves back out from under my car.

No tracker required in mine. Not even a garage. NFU.

Obviously doesn't help much if the car is stolen, but for general security its got to be worth adding an additional (non-OEM) set of locking wheel bolts as the OEM ones supplied have so few variations (24, if I recall correctly?), c.f. some after market ones with 1,000 different "keys".
RS6 PE DMS, Daytona, Pano., 21" 5-V-Spoke Tit.Alloys, C/Ceramics, Dynamic Pack +, Parking Pack Adv., Assist. Pack, TV (MMI only), Road Angel (essential) + Python, A. Connect & Phone Box + S/phone Interface, Head-up Display and Night Vision Assist., RS6 Proj. Puddle Lights, Clear 3M Wrap.

Mini Cooper S ("hot"Chili) 265BHP; VW Fox 59BHP; Citroen C1 68BHP!!

RS4 (B7) w. TTS S/C, C/Ceramics - sold
Audi TT Coupe won at model launch, for 3 months, from Audi UK !
