Brakes

Post by P300 » Fri Apr 28, 2017 10:24 pm

I've just done a deal on a 2009 C6 with 60,000 miles on the clock to replace my S4.

The car is well specced but the brakes are pretty close to the end of their lives which helped knock a large chunk out of the asking price. Just looking for feedback from those who've replaced before as to best sources for replacement front discs, pads and rear pads? Options on upgrades?

Welome to the C6 club.
I'm currently going through the same process and my best quote to date for OEM parts only is £1769 delivered for discs and pads front and back. Thats from Deutschparts.
Also looking at 405mm Brembos.

Thanks. There seem to be various options from buying from Audi to just sourcing the Pagid front discs from Euro car parts and having the option on pads. Not sure how I feel about that option though!

Welcome to the C6 fold :)

If you stick with OEM, I would highly recommend doing the "Phaeton" mod

Costs roughly £100 for the parts, and you can fit at the same time

Also seriously consider braided hoses and higher quality brake fluid

A search on this forum will find the info you need

Will give slightly better "initial" bite, and helps with brake fade

Thanks Don!

Should be picking the car up next week so keen to get the parts ordered this weekend.

Just need to get my S4 sold now!

euro car parts sell paid discs , they make the genuine items for audi so they are identical items just they are pulled off the production line before having audi stamped into them , i think off the top of my head i paid about £750 for all 4 discs , and run ds2500 pads that costs less than the stock pads and offer better brake feel.

Welcome to the C6 world!

The front brakes biggest issue is the lack of cooling, both from poor disc design and lack of cool air.

Cooling - The Phaeton mod is a cheap (<£150 IIRC) easy way of getting more cooling air to the face to the disc which helps a lot.

Front Discs - As you're looking at replacing the worn OEM's I'd recommend a set of AP Racing 390mm 2 piece replacement discs for £800 (same as OEM cost). These are lighter, better cooled and cheaper to replace than OEM. It's £200 for the Bells/Hub (the central bit that is bolted to the car) and £600 for the rotors (the bit the pad touches) and only the rotors need replacing so £600 vs £800 OEM. I have used them on the road and track and they are excellent.

Front Pads - My favourite for a fast road car is the Ferodo DS2500 series - Pt No FRP3133H - which are dustier than OEM but much more consistent after repeated braking.

Rear Pads - These don't really make as much difference as the fronts so OEM discs/pads are fine. However I use DS2500 pads - Pt No FCP1655H - with OEM discs.

Fluid - If you're doing the front discs/pads you might as well do the fluid too. I like ATE Superblue/Type200, Motul 600 RBF, AP RAcing R4 or Castrol SRF etc rather than OEM. You'll need 3L to do the calipers and ABS pump.

Perfect - thanks for that!

Funnily enough a friend of mine also mentioned changing the fluid and going with braided hoses. Looks like the Phaeton mod is simple enough and as said before plenty of advice on how to do it out there so will also get that sorted.

I'm going to take it off to MRC for a service and general check when I get the chance so I guess I will find out how good or bad it all is then. Will sort the brakes first though as they are looking pretty urgent.

Wow, they were my first port of call but i was quoted almost double that! I didnt know they were in fact OEM equivalent so i left them.

my fronts cost £430.42 inc vat for the pair , euros part number 104441958
rears £386.40 inc vat for the pair , euros part number 104441988
ate typ 200 fluid 1l is £8.50 plus vat euro part number 524770150

and if you want ds2500 pads i cant put you in touch with the cheapest dealer just drop us a pm

thats best price you will find on ate typ 200, but the discs are just standard trade price as they are classed as special order and i had to wait ages for them to do another production run ! if you struggle let me know and ill go down to my dealer as i get the best prices from them and see if i can sort you out.

Whats the consensus on disc face? Drilled / Grooved / J Hook?
Edited to add - Demon Tweeks only seem to offer grooved.

Grooved is the only option from the factory as they don't sell C6 in drilled (or drilled/grooved). J-Hook is a custom job and around £1200 for the discs alone!

Now J-Hook is technically the "best" because there is always a section of the J-Hook in contact with the pad for de-gassing but whether the difference is detectable for any driving other than full track driving, I don't know.

*EDIT* - I bought all mine (pads/grooved discs/fluid) from Clark Motorsport which was next day delivery, here's the e-mail I got from them -

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Ian

The discs are £294.80 each and the bells are £99.70 each both prices include VAT.

Kind regards

You need these part numbers -

2x CP8080Z240 - Bells
1x CP8080Z24CG12 - Right Disc
1x CP8080Z25CG12 - Left Disc

The bells need fitting to the discs (all parts supplied) and you need a 6NM Torque wrench & an E12 Star Socket (maybe E10) but its very simple and only takes about 15 minutes per disc.

Front bells = £169.95 each
Front discs = £303.31 each
Rear bells = £102.68 each
Rear discs = £303.31 each

Thats the same prices im seeing from Demon Tweeks. I was suprised when I saw that front and back discs cost the same though.

As always IanH755, many thanks for all the useful info. just wish those prices still held but weighing it all up, this is the way im going.
