Looking for some spaceship action !

Post by Unomelodica » Sat Feb 04, 2017 5:49 pm

Hi all

Been a silent lurker for some time . Great forum for advice and tips and have pretty much read all the posts, well not all !
Looking to get myself into the fold. A bit of history , had a mixture of fast bm's mercs etc then went a bit soft in the head and moved to Lexus where I have been ever since .

Yes,I know but I had my reasons ! for me I do a considerable amount of motorway miles ,my current Lexus provides the perfect springboard , it's no sports car but I suppose I knew that - maybe I grew up too quick !

Anyway I'm looking at a FL car key features pan roof / dynamic pack/ 21's/black or grey /acc /sports seats / don't really need ceramics as the car will be pounding up and down the motorway, it will never be tracked - one think that really appeals is night vision as many a time I have found myself in the wi small hours driving thorough unlit B roads trying to find Venues etc .

One thing I believe is that the service from Audi may fall short of that of Lexus - it's just the personal touch that makes the overall ownership experience so pleasurable - Having recently walked into an Audi showroom and simply walking out as no one was really that bothered , my perception was they whetw far more interested in group chats and just in awe of their blank computer screens !

Anyway ramblings over are there any other key features that would be good to have and if I was looking for a fairly well specced car with above parameters just ball park ,what would I be looking at both private / trade.

Best

The matrix headlights (standard of FL) will light up the whole lanes at night, I doubt the night vision will be any more than a cool gimmick.

It's not the LED part that is amazing, it's the matrix. Does your lexis have Matrix LED?

mike i don't think it has the matrix , but it was one of the first to have the led lights .The clarity on the road is great I suppose the matrix adds the next dimension .

Mike is referring to their smart feature i.e constant full beam with dip only where there are cars in front or coming the other way. It is weird coming up behind a car with hedgerows on both sides lit with full beam well ahead of the car you are following.

Mine's a motorway muncher, too. I wish I had spec'ed the comfort seats with massage; I don't get on particularly with the supersports seats, though most will defend them to the death. After my spec was locked down, I got the chance to try the comfort seats - you can adjust the side bolsters to provide most of the lateral support of the supersports seats and certainly enough support for the public road.

Also, the HUD is vital in my opinion. You need to constantly keep an eye on the speed, On an empty motorway, 100mph is easy to creep up to as there is no sense of speed in this car.

You already mention the ACC package, which is - of course - essential for motorway munching.

Wilbore thanks and totally agree with the ACC. I have radar cruise on my current Lexus although its a 2010 vintage, i'm sure this one's better . I'm use to 435bhp this will be in another ballpark, actually league !

I hear you about the motorway speeds , its all to easy in cars with so much capability .

Yes, the ACC in the A6 is one of the best, a significant step forward from the previous single-radar only systems. It uses pseudo-stereoscopic twin radars, a camera and the front ultrasonic sensors to make its decisions and you can see the intelligence in the system whenever you use it.

You also get brake guard and Lane assist with ACC which are both great features.

looks like ACC is a must for me.

Just some casual browsing has thrown this up

Is on point or too much coin ?

Regarding Night Vision, I had it on my FL car but left it off on my PE. It does work and once caught a small deer crossing about 100m in front of me - warning sound and flashed up in HUD.

It's quite cool looking in between the dials at people bracketed in yellow when it's dark but the novelty wear's off quite quickly as you find yourself always trying to look down at the dash instead of out the windscreen! It was much better at picking up people and cyclists in the dark than I was, but it doesn't really help you at that generally (unless it sees danger) because the display is in the dash, and I can't drive this car the way I want to and look at the dash.

Personal choice really but, I didn't think it was worth the £1750 when I spec 'd the PE as towards the end I forgot about it most of the time and it only really helped me once in 12 months. If the video display could be integrated in the HUD, or better still as an augmented display across the windscreen I would definitely have it again in the future. But for now the video between the dials is not practically useful really.

thanks @ mat776- a couple of dealers have said its a rare commodity on used cars, as mike points out possibly more of cool gimmick.
