Do you tax a used car thats rfl free ?

Post by ahoooga » Wed Dec 14, 2016 11:46 pm

So she buys a new car ( used 12 plate) bluemotion diesel that's in band A for road tax and we go to collect it tomorrow.
but
It's showing as not taxed on the govt check-vehicle-tax site and shows the MOT was done today ( so we know its up to date)
we haven't bought a car since they changed the thing about not passing a tax on with a sale of a car,
What we need to know is, do we still have to register it somewhere as being owned and taxed ( although its free) ? similar to tax is free on old vehicles but you still had to apply for it.
just curious as I can't speak with the dealer till the morning
Thanks in advance

Yes, but usually you do that online in conjunction with the dealer.

Car I bought earlier this year the dealer bought to our house and did that online via his tablet.

It turned out that the dealer did the tax thing before I got there today and its a case of doing it online in future, even though it will cost £0.00. He explained this is so you have to prove the car is insured.

I thought that was only on new cars registered from April 2017 ?

Really? Quote from AutoExpress:
What do 2017 road tax changes mean for cars already registered?

Current road tax bands won’t change for cars that are already registered, so the existing VED bands will remain in place - meaning cars registered before April 2017 will continue to pay the current VED rates even after the new VED bands come into force. Fortunately for owners, the existing rates for CO2 bands are much more favourable to lower-polluting vehicles.

Dealer should tax in your name, car would currently be in trade to generate any rebate/refund/cancellation to previous owner, probably wouldn't do until on the day of collection though or when they invoice off the transaction.

The tax process is exactly the same as when the tax has a fee but its just a nil transaction.

Toby - your spot on, that's exactly what happened, they did it on the day of collection and that's exactly how the dealer described taxing ion 12 months time as well.
What was ironic, is that this is the first time I had a dealer willingly put 12 months on a car for me ! :jump:
