HPI check from VIN number only

Post by ollys » Fri Nov 11, 2016 9:07 am

Does anyone know how to do this? Ideally to get the reg number too?

The reason I ask is not because I want to build a ringing empire but because I am restoring an old 1976 vespa small frame which I bought off some bloke on eBay four years ago without a clue and without a V5, although it does have a reg plate.

Now that I have built the engine and the frame is at the body Shop awaiting being made beautiful, I thought I would sort out this pesky v5 business. So did a hpi I check on the reg number - all clear and shows as black scoot, which is good because the scoot was black when I bought it, but it also shows that it has a colour change from green to black in 1996. Not so unusual you might think - scoots get repainted all the time - but my issue is that I think the colour change was in fact a frame change. My scoot is a 50cc but the frame is from a 125 primavera - I'm convinced that the vespa (which was made by PIaggio's UK agent, Douglas, at the time) cannot have left the factory with that frame.

If I apply for a new V5 I need to give both the reg number and the frame number. If both don't match the DVLA's records (because the frame has been swapped) then I won't get a V5. I therefore need to know either the VIN number for my reg, or the reg number for the frame (if that is HPI clear I could register that bike instead).

Can do a hpi check from my frame number and get details of the registration associated with it?

Otherwise what are my options - can I re-register the bike somehow on a Q plate?

Many thanks
Olly

I am pretty sure a HPI on the reg check gives you the VIN. I will see if I have an old one laying around to check.

Looks like the last HPI check I did I had to supply the VIN and the reg and it tells you if they match. But I don't think you can get the VIN from the reg or vice versa.

Further reading suggests that a trader with an HPI account can do it from the VIN only. Might be worth trying to find a friendly one.
