Oil debate
Oil debate
Right guys got a question that's been on my mind for a while.
What oil do you guys use I have been using quantum 5-30
But I know a lot of guys on the 2.0 tfsi engines use 5-40 millers nano drive
This is to reduce wear and oil consumption and is recommended for the stage 2+ mapped cars by a few tuners
So what grades and brands are people using bar standard spec

Re: Oil debate
Well I'm still using the Quantum 5w30, I was contemplating starting same line of query. Someone mentioned racing oil might actually be better but there wasn't any detailed information so I didn't pursue it, II have the Stage 2 remap too.
Re: Oil debate
Well in theory 5-40 would offer superior protection as I would be thicker at hot temps.
That would offer better covering for components and heat dissipation and reduce oil consumption.
The milers nanodrive is expensive but supposed to be very good and offers very high wear protection
The 2.0 tfsi tuned cars suffer from fuel pump follower wear and this oil makes the wear a lot less !
Just wanting to see if anyone else has made the jump , although I may just do it anyhow

Re: Oil debate
I used OEM Quantum at stage 2 but for stage 3+ I use Fuchs Titan Pro S 5w-30 from opieoils which is an Ester based fully synthetic. I tried the Fuchs in 5w-40 but the car seemed to rev slightly freer at 5k+ rpm with the 30 viscosity.

Re: Oil debate
Hmm seems strange, how noticeable was it that it didn't want to rev as freely ?
The millers oil I was on about shouldn't be bad it a motorsport spec oil and suitable for high temps 125c normal upto 150c peak , just trying to find something to shown down wear and oil consumption , speaking from other cars iv had similar my old m5 which revs more freely and harder than the rs6 run 10w60 which is substantially thicker than what we run

Re: Oil debate
Ian would you advise me to go to 5w 40 for my next oil change, Quantum does supply however it's not their 'Long life range' which I'd have preferred.
Re: Oil debate
Also it's bugging me but I can't seem to reset / delete the lap timer.
Re: Oil debate
Farravi- I wouldn't advise anyone, I'm not in anyway an expert in Oils, which is why I asked Opieoils for their opinion with mine.
Timer reset - are you holding in the big bottom button on the right hand stalk for 3+ seconds?
Sid - It could have been complete placebo effect as I went from OEM 5w-30 on a stage 2 to 5w-40 on a stage 3+ with a 3 month gap in between without driving it but it just "felt" almost like the engine was tighter at 5k+ rpm than before. When I did the next oil change after about 4k miles I went back to a 5w-30 (still Titan Pro-S) and the engine "felt" freer again like at stage 2.
Now how much actual difference in viscosity there is between a 30 & 40 and whether you would genuinely be able to measure a noticeable difference in engine performance I've no idea, but my car feels "better" with a 5w-30 - could all be in my head though

Re: Oil debate
The difference is what kind of lubrication you get - full, mixed- or boundry lubrication (all depends on temperature and viscosity).
The difference between 30 and 40 is so small though, so I'd eat my hat if Ian's experience is anything else than placebo.
Edit: Too low viscosity and you get premature wear. (<15cSt). Too high viscosity and the lubepump won't be able to pump adequately, meaning higher temp, poor lubrication and all that comes with it. This is way outside of the discussion of 30 vs 40.

Re: Oil debate
I may take the plunge in the coming weeks and try the millers nanodrive 5w40
It seems the go to oil for the 2.0 tfsi lads for similar reasons I want to try it
,it's not strictly Vw spec but it's one of the highest quality oils on the market

Re: Oil debate
I've only found one reason to change from the manufacturer's recommended grade and that's excessive (IMO) oil use and usually from one of two causes:
1: Engine wear on a high mileage engine
2: Manufacturer has spec'd a low grade in an attempt to produce a freer reving engine for (I suspect) fuel economy
Unfortunately, Audi tend to the second with their '1 litre per 1000Km is not unusual' stand point. Which isn't anything new - I've a hand book for a 1981 Ur quattro which contains that statement.
My partner has a 2010 A1 which goes pretty close to that figure - whereas in six months the 6 has used maybe 250mL, if that.
My old V70 was at over 1 litre a month when it topped 180K miles, changing from 10W30 to 15W40 solved that and kept it going for another 50K.

Re: Oil debate
Adding to the debate - how often do you change your oil?
I cover around 11-1200 miles a month and with previous vehicles have aimed to do a change on the first weekend of every third month. I've yet to do one for the 6 and my OCD is starting to nag at me.

Re: Oil debate
Mines every 3 months (between 3-4k miles) but I realise that probably a little excessive

Re: Oil debate
So - how much clearance do I need under the car to do an oil change? Bear in mind that I'm restricted to using axle stands at the moment.
