Am I blind or are the Xenon on our RS6 very bad ?

Post by Droobui » Sun Jan 03, 2016 3:56 pm

Hello,

After a few weeks with my RS6 now, I found the driving at night exceptionaly bad.

I had the same with my Audi S4 B5, the xenons are just terrible, with time. Wich makes me think, why is it that with time our xenon loose their power ? I took a look at the glense and it is all shady, might it be the cause ?
It looks like an old dog eye with cataract.
I know it's not the xenon themselves, I changed them and the balast on my old S4, and it was still crap :nodder:

Any of you experiencing that or have any recomendation in order to improve our lignitning at night ?

Over time, the projectors lose their reflectability (is that a word?) and the outer plastic shells get a sand treatmet which also contributes. New reflectors, polish the fronts and put in 50w 5000K bulbs & ballasts.

As said, they do go poor, over time the bulb also losses it's shine, I would say the reflectors are burnt out. Me and Simon are working on the rs6 C5 setup and are nearly close to how it all should be, just waiting on some pictures.

I put new headlights on mine and they are very bright indeed with the standard bulbs. Every time i go out at night i get people flashing me, i thought the alignment was out at first so had it double checked but spot on. They light the road up well for some distance!!

I had new headlamps placed around two years ago and it made a big difference. I did have HID main beam as well, but didn't refit them.

Interested in where this thread goes as I've always thought the lights were rubbish. Admittedly they are better now they aren't aimed at the floor (thanks again Carl) and maybe it's the fact I'm travelling faster than the speed of light.....feels like it anyway....but if an easy upgrade is going to be possible then......

I think I found what I am looking for.

And at 77$ a piece, it doesn't hurt to buy them and try to see if it improves the lights.

Any of you tried those ebay ones ?

How are you going to fit your ballasts, xenon bulbs and level adjusters to those things?

Trups has a plan, I should have my new headlights with uprated projector, ballast, bulb etc up and running before the end of the month.

I bought these halogen A6 headlights, after splitting them and having a looksee all the self levelling stuff and the wiring harness will swap over from the original rs6 lights.

We're just working out the best way of mounting an aftermarket projector as the ones we'd planned to use aren't quite right.

I think Trups is planning on doing a pre-assembled already upgraded headlights that will be plug and play. Watch this space :D

Will they have the adjustment to dip to the left so they will be safe to use in the UK?

I find the lights better than 90% of other cars out there at the moment but the lenses are polished up. To get them back to new condition polish up the lenses using a 3M headlight restorer kit, £25 from what I remember.

That's the issue with the current projectors we tried is that they are left hand drive, I tried swapping the dipped beam sheild over but it was a no-go, totally different designs. So now we're trying another very good projector that comes in RHD so will dip to the left without modification as you said Gripper. :)

The polishing kits are good, i also got some meguires uv protection stuff so they don't go cloudy after polishing (you polish away the uv coating). But all my headlight adjusters were stripped so desided to renew the entire headlights.

Anyone heard anything from Si recently? I was thinking of doing some work to my headlights and wondered how he got on with his upgrade.
