Dash cams, you tube and that video

Post by davethedesigner » Thu Dec 17, 2015 12:14 am

I suspect we've all seen the various posts of the bloke who filmed himself and in an ill advised moment posted it on you tube. The police were then able to work out where and what speed...admittedly they only had to look at the speedo footage but you get the idea, knowing where it was filmed they could have worked it out by the rate at which the background was moving. I digress.
Imagine then cruising past someone who has a dash cam fitted and takes objection to your shiny pride and joy 'making due progress', could they not submit the video to the local constabulary complete with your numberplate and if not your actual speed but their speed from which yours could presumably be estimated.....something to think about.

I wouldn't have thought dashcam footage on its own could be used to prove a speeding offence?

Even with police radar guns and in car police footage, isn't/wasn't a common defence in court to argue along the lines of them not being calibrated or used properly? How would they prove that someone's dashcam can accurately record the speed?

However, if it's not a speeding offence and some kind of illegal manouever (e.g. dangerous overtake as mentioned) i can see video evidence of that being incriminating.

Decent ones (blackvue etc) are around £200. That's for something with excellent night footage. All are hd etc now but cheaper ones really struggle at night. The decent ones don't. And even better, are wifi, so you don't need a gash screen. :)
