Re: power steering pump
Lots of things can cause that noise, from a loose clamp to a small leak somewhere. The noise is generally pump cavitation. Mine has been noisy to VERY noisy on cold winter starts since I got the car 4 and a half years ago. Still no sign of the pump actually giving up, and on occasion it was noisy for miles even driving in a straight line. I forget about it when spring rolls around and it's quiet again. Many fluid flushes have been done with varying degrees of improvement, never lasting long.

Re: power steering pump
sorry to jump on someone else's old post but seems relevant...
my PS pump? started making a noise recently as well, on inspection I could see a glittery look to the PS fluid. (Im assuming its the pump as the noise increases when turning the steering when stationary and goes away when not under load).
Since my cars already sat with the engine and box on the floor (gearbox rebuild) Ive just told them to go ahead and replace the PS pump as well (hardly going to make a great deal of difference to the price in the grand scheme of things!).
Any thoughts?

Re: power steering pump
The glitter sounds like swarf. Could be pump or rack. Don't feel like changing the rack while it's all in bits, too?

Re: power steering pump
My pump is a teeny bit noisy first thing, going slow, first gear and tight turning. I've done a few fluid changes and my fluid has a lovely green tinge to it just like the stuff straight out the bottle.
There was a chap in the US who rebuilt one for a S6 (they looked very similar), but I don't know where you'd get a rebuild kit. Also it didn't get rid of the noise.

Re: power steering pump
hmm, well ill take a hit on replacing the pump first, at least the rack (I assume!) should be easy enough to replace even once the engine and box are back in.
Re: power steering pump
Got a feeling the rack is an engine out job. Could be wrong though.

Re: power steering pump
The rack is about £400 to rebuild but it's an engine out job unless you can get around the £1500/$1500 bolt thing. I think it was a term coined by RS6.com in reference to trying to remove the center bolt with the engine is situ, I think someone did manage it, then held the bolt in question aloft and said "beholden, the $1500 bolt". Ameritards.
No matter where you go, there you are.
Re: power steering pump
huff.... ! is there anything on this car that does require the engine to be removed first?!
Thanks for that, ill speak to them now to before its too late.

Re: power steering pump
Thought panda had her rack replaced without removing the engine.

You can remove without taking out the engine, difficult to get to the bolts. My mechanic did it though

Re: power steering pump
new PS pump resolved it for me. Thankfully wasn't the rack.
