I have had trackers on my cars for the last fifteen or more years. After they have been fitted you are completely unaware of them so I can't fathom how they can be a pain? Indeed, my latest one lets me see where the car is at all times, geo-fence it for alerts and get statistics on every journey (probably useful for the next service to see how the "road test" went). Brilliant.

Plus, if my car is stolen, whilst I might not want it back, if the tracker means I get it back and there is no damage (or little damage) done, my wallet tells me that is better than having to declare on my next insurance application that the total cost of my most recent claim was £80,000.

Carrying that's daft key fob thingy all the time. Then you lose it or break it or the battery goes flat. A couple of times the mrs and myself were away in the other car. My son had to move my car (it was in the way) they call to say my car has been moved etc go through all the security rigmarole then they were going to immobilise my car unless I married up the fob with my car. Not going to happen as I was away for the day. Then the next time my battery went flat and killed my car. They had to send a signal to the tracker to make it come alive again. Took a bit of fault finding to figure out it was the tracker. Really put me off.

I understand from a friend who has one of the Geo-Fencing type trackers that they also "record" the speed of the vehicle. Much to his surprise in the event of a theft OR an accident the service providers are required, on demand, to provide the speed information to the police! Big brother a step too far!

I am always careful where I park, sometimes it can take me several minutes to find a more secure spot (well lit etc). I have had a car stolen and recovered in the past and that experience has shown me that i never want to see any of my cars again should they be stolen.

Agreed that those trackers with additional fobs are a pain. I just go for the install and forget type.

My understanding is that the Police have to apply to the court for that data, and access will only be granted if the circumstances of the incident justified it. Not too worried by that.

As to theft, it's a difficult one to call, I think. A tracker might have returned the car to you in hours - before the scrotes had the chance to seriously abuse it. To my mind, the worst case scenario is the car disappearing and then re-appearing a week or two later, after the jewelry raid and subsequent police chase and forced stop. The tracker would (hopefully) prevent that.

Insurance sorted.

Churchill 344 notes no tracker. Happy with that.

Insurance is no issue as long as value is below 75k

going through this at the moment...
car was stolen/recovered and the police managed to ask Tracker to activate it.
I didn't even know it had one...
Just been on to Tracker and after a bit of messing about, they confirmed it has an old Tracker Horizon on it.
Then the selling started...
£149 for a Tracker Monitor - £169/year
£249 for a Tracker Locate - £189/year

question is... whats the point paying if the plod can request any trackers that are fitted to be activated?

Times are changing, won't have much choice. Just quoting the purchase as under a threshold will only bite you in the arse at some point.

That Churchill deal is amazing. No Tracker on mine. But I went NFU for £550. They really do adhere to their "we will not quibble" tag line, and worth every extra pound IMO.

only if you actually paid more for the car? Daft quoting 75k for a car that cost 150k but moving a few k is nothing. They wont pay full price anyway.

No tracker with my premium.

My old F10 M5 comes from the factory with a tracker but insurance companies don't recognise it go figure!!
