Its a great car but be prepared for the computer to always be in standby mode when you "mess up"/go outside of its parameters. Even with ESP off the onboard computer is still working to keep you safe. If you buy a new one you'll want DCC (Dynamic Chassic) plus Discovery Nav as a minimum as well as a host of other options so it can become expensive quickly.

This is the big one: HALDEX 4WD. This is a clutch plate system that is REACTIVE to driving conditions. Under normal driving it's 90% FWD until it "needs" to transfer power to the rear. Quattro is permanent. Expect to feel the back end "kick in".

Asides from that a Revo Stage 1 remap (0-60 in 3.7s consistent on High Octane) will make it unbeatable in most cases.

Having sold many Golf R's and owning an RS4 now, the Golf R will feel very "SAFE" in comparison. Go and T/D one if you can, just be prepared for dealers to be cagey about it.

AND FFS DONT BUY THE MANUAL.

Well I bought the Golf R and want to give you all my thoughts! First of all, I really miss many things about the RS4. I would equate the RS4 to a very classy, expensive suit and the Golf R as a set of bright, light running shoes. The RS4 is a special car as we all know. It looks amazing, sounds amazing and just has a certain presence that the Golf R will never have. Now on to the good about the Golf R. First of all the car hauls ass! I did the neuspeed power module and a better breathing air filter and I must say this car feels faster than the RS4. Also, with the DCC, the car really handles very nicely. It feels nimble (compared to the RS4) and rides great. In comfort the suspension is very comfortable whereas in race it stiffens things up nicely. The interior in the Golf R doesn't feel as up scale however its comfortable and has great tech stuff. I have the 8" discovery pro as well as the additional niceties of the tech package. The car also gets substantially better fuel economy (no <beep>!). Ha Ha and one of the biggest reasons I bought the Golf R is because it still came with a manual. I know the DSG works great with this car but want to keep driving manuals as long as I can!

Honestly wish I could have been able to keep the RS4 as a toy and buy the Golf R however I funds and lack of space prevented me from doing so.

Overall I'm happy with my decision!

Unlikely! I'm 42 years old and don't drive like an asshole. I will never drop the clutch or launch the car. Stock clutch should hold out fine for the way I drive!

Are you saying the clutch on the Golf R / Audi S3 lasts 10,000 miles?

I'm saying that EVERY Golf R I have ever driven be it as a Demonstrator or a PX has had slip issues. Got one in stock currently with 10k up it that slips hard after 3k RPM.

It's a viscous circle as well as you have to be aggressive with the clutch for spirited driving.

Reccomend DSG/S Tronic over manual for either of these cars. Totally transforms the experience and means you'll have minimal issues.

I know its not a direct comparison, but I also succumbed to the lure of a 'new' car with all the tech and warranty. I bought a 430d in June and took delivery in Sept, my RS4 went on the market a month later. To cut a long story short, all the tech and gimmickery could never replace the feel and presence of the RS, I sold the 4 series 3 months later for a big loss and am now back in the RS4.

It depends on the individual circumstances, but I also have a Discovery 4 with all the bells and whistles on for the winter so that does all the long haul journeys. The RS is a car that I've properly connected with and will endeavour to keep as long as possible.. A day after the BMW went I noticed my aux rad leaking, wish I had a bloody warranty haha!

Thanks for the info. A manual S3 Sportback is a serious consideration for us at some point. Will almost certainly be from an Audi dealer, so I will ask to see the V5, and target one-owner privately owned cars

Strange the S3 doesn't get the same rave reviews as the Golf, as I really prefer the Audi quality interior, but the sat nav coming out of the dash is a real no no for me.

The bigger higher resolution screen HDD Nav with the touch pad is damn nice though. Wouldn't want an A3 S3 without it.

After five months without the RS4, the only things I miss are the looks the RS4 used to get all the time and the fantastic noise of the V8.

The R is such a complete package and for the money is great value as it replaced my RS4 which was really never used in the last months i had it and the wife's S3.

Agree re the exhaust and would rather have two ovals.

The trend for the dash top sat Nav is making the list for the next car rather small.

The new B9 has is so thats out, might be a Macan Turbo as that is growing on me.

Yes. When I had to be sensible and sell a car last year, it was always going to be the S4
