Back box or resonator delete
Back box or resonator delete
Afternoon all,
Now that i am using the RS6 again the time has come to do something about the standard exhaust. Its just waaaay to quiet!! No good having a V8 when you can barely hear it from inside!
Having spent a fortune this year on all my other toys i'm not going to go down the down the traditional Miltek route, so, with cheapness in mind and the aim to unleash some fruity V8 decibels, whats the general opinion from those with experience as to how best achieve my goal??...
Do i-
1. Remove stock backboxes and weld in straight through pipes, retaining the oval tips as not keen on any other look, or
2. Remove resonators and leave stock back boxes in place, or
3. Remove resonators, open back boxes and inspect internals, possibly removing/ reducing sound deadening where possible.
I want to be able to hear the V8 soundtrack within the car but can't be doing with excessive drone.
I've watched clips of the back box delete by another forum member and think it sounds a wee bit too loud, however might sound different close up. Has anyone got clips of just the resonator delete?
Any help much appreciated.
Cheers
Gordon

Re: Back box or resonator delete
Just remove the center sections.
No matter where you go, there you are.
Re: Back box or resonator delete
I've no experience of removing centre resonators on a 6 but it's a bloody good mod for the 4s.
Re: Back box or resonator delete
Remove Resonators - Louder in the car, little louder outside
Remove Back-Boxes - Little bit louder in the car, very loud outside, more mid-range V8 noise.
Remove Both - Women faint at the burble, men instinctively recognise the presence of an ultimate alpha male, children will hero worship you. However, everyone's now deaf.
Remove Both plus no cats - As above times infinity!
I went with the back-box delete only and added a bunch of vids on YouTube. I kept the resonators as the car drones at motorway speeds (quite badly to my ears) but if you can deal with that then definitely remove both (like Bam had).

I did this for a little while. I still cannot hear properly.IanH755 wrote:Remove Both plus no cats - As above times infinity!

Yeh it was your video clips i was looking at, did you try just the resonator delete first before going down the back box route, or did you have experience in someones else's car?
I'm keen to hear just a resonator delete as going by your clips it does sound quite loud outside with the back boxes removed, maybe just a wee bit too loud for my liking.
Sound wise, how does the back box delete compare to the Miltek res and non res? I believe even Miltek can be quite droney too, i guess this will be the non resonated one though.
Cheers
Re: Back box or resonator delete
Outside is a "little" anti-social at start-up during the SAI phase but once warm it's not that much louder at idle than stock. the big difference is past 2500rpm or full throttle where the outside noise could be considered "LOUD" but it's a nice sound inside the car, not boomy etc
I've had a few drives/passenger trips in non-res cars (usually milltek) and the 2k rpm motorway "drone" was, for me, a bit punishing after more than a few minutes. However, everyones different and some people may like the way it makes your head feel like you've got it squashed in a vice like that the seen scene in casino!
Milltek - The BB delete sounds more mid-tone like (very loosely) a Italian V8 compared to milltek sounding much deeper/bassier like say a US V8. It's a poor analogy but thats the best way I can think of describing it. Sadly the best way to hear it is in person.

Re: Back box or resonator delete
The dreaded drone is not something i can tolerate anymore, my S2 was a nightmare with a straight through exhaust and 1 small back box, yeh it sounded brutal and for long enough i really enjoyed it, but when i refitted the standard "proper good quality" back box it was sheer bliss on the ears. The drone was well and truly gone and the true 5 pot noise could be heard once again.
I must admit i prefer a more bass tone to the exhaust note so wouldn't want to change the type of noise too much, just increase the volume of it. Have you actually been in a 6 with just the resonators removed? You mention in your previous comments about drone but that was related to the non res Milltek i think.

Re: Back box or resonator delete
Good point, I've not been in a non-res'd stock exhaust RS6, just the non-res milltek.
Bass - The wider the bore the deeper the exhaust note (usually) so the wider 2.75in of the milltek (2.5in stock) is probably the reason it sounds bassier.
Drone - I had an R34 about 10 years ago and the drone from the no cat, no res Blitz Nur Spec exhaust was immense. In fact it was so bad it put me off non-res for life!

Re: Back box or resonator delete
My Milltek Non-Resonated sounds really rather good - but the turbos on our cars do muffle them a lot more than NA motors.
Did about 800 miles with the Mrs & Kids in on hols last month and nobody complained - although maybe I just couldn't hear them...

Re: Back box or resonator delete
Where is the video of Bams car on the dyno? Epic noise.
When we left ADI the other week both Nick and I started up our Non res miltek & secondary cat deleted cars and they both warbled almost in tandem. Sounded ace on cold startup. Its a shame we get wind noise with the windows down. Maybe I should drive around with the bootlid open instead.
