DRC noise under normal operation

Post by richrocksmy » Thu Jul 02, 2015 2:08 pm

First, sorry for posting about DRC as it's an issue that's been discussed at length. I've search the forums but can't find anything directly related so here goes...

Received my RS4 back in April and I love it so much! Really happy with all the spec choices I made even though there were moments of panic late in the game..Recently I've noticed 'noise' from the suspension going over speed bumps and the like. The noise sounds like someone is dropping a cricket ball on a piece of plywood from about 10cm (oddly specific) and only occurs when I've first driven the car in the morning or after not being used for a few days. Both of these times the weather has been on the warmer side.

I spec'd the DRC and I suspect that this is just normal noise as the car doesn't feel any different and it doesn't seem to be coming from any one corner of the car.

Can anyone confirm?

Cheers

I can confirm that's symptoms of DRC knock yes.

Whether you think it should be normal on a £60k car or not is another matter. I don't. :bigblink:

I'd be inclined to agree...

Next question - is it something I need to do anything about other than ignore, there seems to have been varying results with DRC replacement and repressurisation?

It's common but not right, I had the same with mine. Returned to dealer under warranty and they replaced a front shock, re-gassed and a software update and now its silent.

Some delaers have stated thats its normal to have the knock, some have tried fixing it. I believe I got a straight answer and I also knew what it required before I engaged my dealer, something must have worked as its perfect now and I am 5k in since the fix and still silent.

This is my second RS4 but this one has the DRC and within about 400miles of a brand new car it's doing this "knocking". Took it back to the dealer and did a <beep> Load of test and said its " normal ". Only happens in comfort setting

Welcome to the club. Hitchin and Bedford have both been told the noise is normal (a characteristic of the car) despite a master tech at hitchin saying the noise is excessive. Audi don't give two shits - too busy selling a1's to the masses to care about loyal RS brand supporters.

in completely unrelated news, my test drive with Porsche is this week...

There's no such thing as the RS brand, it's just an extension to the rest of the Audi range.

Which Porsche are you testing?

It seems pretty normal as many cars have the knock.. I had my drivers side front re-gassed and it seemed OK but there is still a knock. My Wife's new GTD's suspension makes more noise. I am living with it as the car still handles great.

I'm testing a Cayman gts with a view to actually buying a gt4 (unfortunately there is zero chance of testing a gt4 due to demo availability uk wide).

I don't think I'm going to like it as much as I hope - I'm also hoping to get an extended test of an RS7 in the next few weeks and I fear I'll like that more. Of course - very different cars. I just need to make up my bloody mind what I want! Ideally both I suppose but not in this lifetime!

Ross you'll love the Cayman. I had a 987 Boxster for a while and it was superb, just not practical for my use long term. The latest generation Cayman / Boxsters and especially the GTS and Spyder will be great. The GT4 is going to be better still. I would expect it to hold its value very, very well too.

Have you seen the Chris Harris video (specifically when they have a look underneath)? It's a hell of a lot of car for the money.

There's one GT4 available....its just under 100k. They will be going for big dollars. There's no additional allocation as yet. If and when there is you'll need to be on the dealer's bum chum list.

I've driven Cayman S. It was nice, but not as well screwed together as 911 and, whilst it handled well, it was a bit slow. Also required a lot of thrashing to get the performance, not necessarily a bad thing, but might grate.

I've not had any indication ordering is an issue so we'll chat about that if I like it. It's a while away anyway so lots of water to pass under the bridge first.

That video is rather awesome though!

Aye, it's an awesome motor. Was eyeballing one at the dealer last week.

That's a rather important factoid the dealer has failed to mention. The U.K allocation was sold months ago! Cambridge or Hatfield or ?

They'll get more, its not limited production , so just a case of joining the queue. I'd have one for £64k!

Probably but not certain at the moment. Queue is loooonng.

New Cayman next year, I think, so run will be limited by that.
