heavy smoke on first start

Post by tony091 » Sat Aug 15, 2015 7:26 am

hi there
has anyone had a problem with heavy smoke on first start , been checked out lots of times and whenever it goes to the garage it never does it lol, its very intermittently can be fine for 7-10 days then 1 morning bang smokes heavy for 2 mins when cleared all fine ? been told possible turbo seals worn or some sort of valve not working , head gasket is fine and valve stem seals fine , don't lose water or oil ?? just this embarrassing smoke lol.

Have you been doing anything in particular before parking your car, and having problem?

Id place my bet on turbo seals as well.

When cold these things are like a smoke machine. White smoke, then once the idle revs drop after 1-2 mins it should go away.

cheers for all your replies, yes its strange hasn,t done it in days then yesterday , wollop massive amount of smoke gone after driving for a few minutes then good all day , the smoke itself smells a little oily & carbon but more like a vapour as its more white in colour and don't smell ignited , I have heard of oil vapour hoses and turbo seals letting oil past straight into the exhaust manifold , I think its the route to go down .

Get a video up mate, it will be much easier to diagnose. Or a picture at least.

Hi!
is your car 2008 or early 2009?

in this time audi made a bad oil return pipe and they use upgraded one in 2009-2010
the new one have a little "tank" for the oil.

if u have the old one it can made the smoke....

best regards

^^^ This.
But only affects the right exhaust.
There is a recall available and should be done under warranty - check with your dealer.

Get someone else to start the car after a few days, is it definitely white smoke?

If so, that water/steam.....are you losing coolant?

If it has a tinge of blue then it could be valve stem seals, oil in the inlet tract or weeping turbo bearings.

I hope this helps.

Cheers Ricky

I have exactly the same issue. Got the turbo's serviced, as there was oil in the intercoolers. Sadly, although this sorted the turbo's, I still have the smoking problem.

Booked into MRC at the end of September to see what they can find......
