Ran out of fuel :(

Post by AMGCoelho » Wed Aug 12, 2015 10:41 pm

Hi guys,
I've got a 2004 RS6 Avant. Turns out my petrol gauge isn't very accurate so I ran out of fuel. The AA fixed that but it's never been the same since.
The idling isn't right - it chugs between 800revs & 2000 sometimes. Makes odd sounds, Splutters & sometimes completely cuts out. It's fine on the motorway though.
The AA guy said that 4 of the 8 cylinders weren't functioning at first and then thought maybe it was the gauge. He refueled and it started up so decided that the gauge was probably it and left. Could he have left something open? Any other suggestions? Thanks very much.
Prior to the the car ran b-e-a-utifully.
PS: not too much jargon please.

It needs a scan, buy yourself a Rosstech Vagcom cable or take it to an Indy or a stealer.

I had a similar incident also due to faulty gauge. If you cranked the engine over with no fuel in the lines the fuel pump/s might have run dry and burnt out. After my incident my inline pump had failed requiring replacement.

Maybe sludge has blocked your fuel filter.

But if sludge were present wouldn't this occur before the tank emptied?

Maybe the AA guy putting a few liters in stirred it up. I had this with a Gofl 2 that I sold once. The dickhead new owner ran it dry and then had to have the fuel system cleaned out. Tried to make me pay for half, like it was my fault he was a pump 2-pounder.

Still, I hear what you are saying. Fuel filters are cheap and easy to change though, so might be worth a try. Chances are no-one's ever bothered to change it anyway.

Haha, pump two-pounder. I likes it.
