Wanted B7 RS4 Cabriolet
Wanted B7 RS4 Cabriolet
Hi all,
Newbie just joined as am on the look out for a new car.
I am just about to sell my M3 CSL and thinking of switching sides and going for an Audi after 2 BMWs.
Ideally looking for a black B7 RS4 cabriolet, with no more than 55k miles. Couple for sale at dealers on Autotrader, any ex members cars?
If anyone is looking to sell one please let me know.
Also would be interested if anyone has moved from an M3 CSL to an RS4? I know that the cab isn't really the "drivers" version but I do like the looks, and am hoping I will enjoy the noise!
Hope to join your ranks properly some time soon!

Re: Wanted B7 RS4 Cabriolet
Welcome aboard, you have good taste as the CSL is a lovely car and sounds awesome but so does the RS4.
My advice - Black is boring and a pain to keep clean, I have both black and blue examples so can be objective about it. Have you seen the one I've linked to below? It really is a one of a kind car, owned by a true Audi enthusiast who just so happens to be a respected forum member too.

As Sam says, that's the one to buy so you can stop looking now.

Re: Wanted B7 RS4 Cabriolet
Welcome aboard Jonny and the obligatory FON.
Not had the pleasure of a CSL but would love one. Had a late E46 M3, with SMG, CSL traction update, CSL geo, etc (still not a CSL by along shot though). It was a fantastic car and an absolute hoot. For me the B7 RS4 is a great all round package and overall a better car. The cab Sam linked to is indeed a great car and I reckon you'd be hard pushed to find a better one. As a side note, you can make the RS4 a bit stiffer with the OEM rear SS+ ARB for c.£100 if you so desired.
I take it you were on The CSL register? Was yours Silver Grey or Sapphire Black and any mods? Get some pictures up of it.

Re: Wanted B7 RS4 Cabriolet
I made the move from CSL to B7 RS4 saloon last December.. As fantastic as the CSL was it was never great as a daily driver (which I was eventually using it for) Had 2 x fantastic euro trips in it which will stay with me forever, truly awesome car, However after 4 x various M3's and an M5 I made the move across to the darkside 5 months ago and have to say that so far I'm totally smitten with the RS4.. Mine has a Miltek exhaust which sounds phenomenal, I also had the carbon clean and the MRC stage 2 which in my opinion is critical as the car now feels ballistic with loads and loads of torque, normally after a few months I'm already looking ahead to my next car but currently have no desire for anything else as it is that good, Haven't driven a cab so can't comment on them but wouldn't rule out a saloon or Avant, Try to buy a car from a forum member if possible and it may save you a lot in the long run as these can be expensive beasts if you buy a baddun. Good luck my friend.

Re: Wanted B7 RS4 Cabriolet
Thanks for the welcome, replies and PM!
Jay - that does seem like a great option, but I have just about ruled out silver - I have had a series of silver cars (the CSL is Silver Grey), so really wanted a change.
The blue one also looks very nice, just the mileage quite a lot higher than I wanted.
I am indeed on the CSL register (same username). The CSL is pretty much standard, will post picture when I can access one more easily!
There are two on Autotrader that I have spotted for sale that I will have a look at:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=p
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=p
Not sure if the links work but registrations are YF56 ULY and LG08 CXU. Does anyone know them?
Also any tips as to what to look out for would be appreciated. I gather the main thing to go wrong is the DRC system? Although presumably most cars of around 40-50k miles would not have had it done yet (is that right), so it would just be an added bonus?
Also there seems to be a lot of talk of remapping the RS4 - is it really worth doing, or would a noticeable improvement be obtained by just decoking (which again I understand is a common problem)?
Finally, what is the typical life expectancy of the clutch?
If there are any other things I ought to be looking out for please feel free to educate me!
Thanks for the help guys.
Jon

Re: Wanted B7 RS4 Cabriolet
Hi Jon,
No worries, it's got to be right. I will keep the smell of Myleen Klass a bit longer.
I have owned 2 RS4 Cabs, one black one silver.
The black one was a beauty when clean, but it was a full time job. I had failure on Aux rads and cooler pipes, and DRC failure.
On the silver one, I've had aux rads and cooler pipes and faulty alarm / convenience ECU.
The Mondial warranty is great, never had a problem. Well worth the money if you intend to keep for a couple of years.
£900 first year, £749 second year. Had my money back 4 times over.
Good luck with your search.
Jay.

Re: Wanted B7 RS4 Cabriolet
Jonny, it's obviously your money and choice but personally I would buy on condition and maintenance record. Colour and mileage and secondly to this IMO.
For me the second car looks better, but I've only really put this down to the fact it looks more stock and has buckets. The first one looks to have C6 RS6 wheels, but they could be aftermarket rather than OEM.
Clutches have been known to go from as little as 25k and last over 120k, mechanical sympathy is key. Both of those cars are dealer cars and IMO you lose a lot of knowledge about the car and it's last owner with this. A lot of the time they just come with the stamped service book, etc where as an enthusiast owned and sold car will come (should come) with mountains of paperwork, etc.
There are many B7 RS4's clocking nearly 200k miles now. There are a lot more B5 S and RS4's well over this. They handle the mileage very well. I know the BMW crowds are all about low miles etc though.
As mentioned, personally I wouldn't rule out the Kingisher blue car, go and see it. It's immaculate, knowing Dave and how he treats his cars. It's also a lot cheaper than those two linked and will arguably be in better condition with a lot of big ticket items just paid out for.
Remaps... Much the same as the E46's and most other N/A cars really, not a massive amount of power to be had, but owns report better driveability, etc.
If you are test driving a car, warm it up, put it in 3rd gear at 2k RPM and plant your foot. There is a Laptimer in the DIS menu system. Familiarise yourself with this first then as you hit 3k RPM start the timer going, stop it at 8k rpm. If it does it in c.8.5 seconds it's a healthy car. It's its higher than this it would suggest it could need a carbon clean, much off this and vac leaks would be suspected. There is also a secondary flap in the air box. It should open at 5-5.5k RPM, the note will change a little and the car will feel a little more urgent. If it doesn't do this, it would suggest a vac leak / sticking actuator. Same with the exhaust flaps opening on a valved exhaust.
If I could get away with a cab, I'd have already bought the Kingfisher car!
Good luck with the hunt buddy!

Just to add, I bought a 100k mile saloon over an 18k and 32k mile car as it was in far better condition. There are some dogs out there.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy one of DK's cars, in the nicest possible way he is anal about them. You know it would never want for anything. Exclusive colour and interior, had all the bits done.
Cheers,
Jay.

2nd one looks good , but that steering wheel is hideous !
As said, you need to buy on condition and provenance.
My car drove fine, honestly no noticeable issues, but went into Unit20 and needed a new shocker, suspension arms and had a PAS hose leak.
I could have said don't do anything and I could have punted the car out at £17k and a happy chappie like yourself would come along and buy it thinking they got a deal
But in my world, if a car needs something, it needs doing.
£3.5k later I know I have a perfect car. That in addition to the other couple £k I have spent on the car since owning it.
It's a joy to drive and I'm gonna be quite happy to enjoy it through summer starting with taking it on a trip to Wilton Super Car Classic on Sunday as it seems it's going to be sunny!

Absolutely fair play to you Dave, plenty of people would have got shot without having work done and been happy.
OP, this is the one to buy if you want a cabbie no question.
