If I had a mechanical or tyre failure on the M1 at 80mph, I would fancy my childrens chances of survival being much higher than should the same failure occur at 180mph.

Can't say Ive done more than 80-85 with the kids on board. Must just be some subconcious switch. Have previously done 130 with just myself and the wife in the car, but with all the cameras sprouting up all over the motorways, Im not convinced they arent on all the time - or will be at some point in the future. So I really cant see the point in doing more than 80/85 on the motorway now - its just not worth the hassle imho.

I enjoy the RS6 for its ability to get up to the speeds quickly, not necessarily its top speed. Mines still got the 155 limiter, and I doubt Ill ever hit it, autobahn or not.

Regarding blowouts though, there's a vid of a GTR that has a blow-out at 200mph and he coasts to a stop with no drama at all. I guess if you have common sense and doing try to brake hard or steer you shouldn't have too much of an issue.

The other thing to bear in mind is was the event a quick blast up to 180mph or a sustained cruise.

We all know in the cars we drive, we can reach such speeds in no time at all. In fact i'd hazard a guess without checking the exact stats that when burying the loud pedal at say 80, we'd be well over 150 in less than 10seconds & have probably already started to slow down. Of course this doesn't necessarily make it any better/worse, but the few times in the UK i've (perhaps) had a play into 3 figures, it would have been for a single digit number of seconds. I save such excitement for the track nowadays & i've never taken my kids to a track day & can't imagine i ever would. Although i took my eldest son to VMAX once, however he's technically an adult (although doesn't act like one) :bash:

Even in Germany (unless driving overnight), the chance to sustain such a speed for much more than a few seconds is limited. Would i risk it with my kids in the car? probably not at those speeds, but i'm sure i've probably seen 150 before with eldest son in the car. Have i in Europe with just me in the car? hell yes :jump:

Good friend of mine is a fireman.when you hear some of the stuff he has to deal with you honestly wouldn't want to risk it, sound like a old fart but it's true

well guys, I'm amazed you have got away with the sort of speeds mentioned,I can only assume they didn't do me because they hadn't followed me the required distance, but I spoke to someone today,he was stopped and the law explained because he was pulling out to overtake and then going back into left hand lane ,they couldn't get him in a straight
line, whatever that meant. It has slowed me down as I was well into triple figures and also I,m tending to drive with the lap timer display and digital speed which for me helps a lot.Just another snippet, you may already know, but in France if you get stopped doing 50 kph over any speed limit they will impound your car and you have to go to court to get it back, this was explained to us by a gendarme in detail when we were stopped in my then B7. sure enough some friends got stopped doing 135 mph and the only reason the car wasn't impounded was the driver at the time wasn't the owner of the car but was still fined 1350 euros !!!
Take it easy.

I'm surprised at the reaction to this post. The reality of the situation was this was a very quick blast up to the limiter with no traffic to contend with - we slowed down considerably as soon as we saw any other cars, never mind got close to them. My wife is extremely safety conscious and will routinely "suggest" we slow down on UK motorways in heavy traffic and she was entirely comfortable with the short trip above 100.

Of course, I guess the crowd on here wouldn't approve of me taking my girl to school on the back of my bike when she was four, but that's probably just kicking the hornet's nest. :FIREdevil:

It's a forum & unfortunately opinions are like ar$eholes. I'd suggest not posting this thread on PH though as if you think kicking a hornets nest is bad, try skinny dipping with great white sharks.

My guess was as you've stated, it was a quick blast that lasted likely no longer than 30 seconds & in a car such as yours it would hardly have been a drama. We've all done somewhat silly things with/without our kids so all's good :beerchug:

I had a blowout on my front left tyre on my old B7 S4 at around 115mph and it was no drama what so ever. Very easy to control and bring to a stop. That said I really wouldn't fancy a blow out at 180mph, for me the risk factor really "feels" increased above 150-160, things just suddenly feel much faster and more serious to me at that speed. I'm probably just getting old ;)

On another point raised I was stopped on Christmas day a few years back at 120mph and was let off Scot free with a bit of a telling off!

I still think the best thing, makes me grin anyway, is when you overtake a police car in Germany at 100+.

Maybe I am still 12 at heart, but it makes me smile.

Cheers
