Door open warning?

Post by Cherub77 » Sat Apr 25, 2015 6:38 pm

Had an incident today with my dogs. The Boot on my avant somehow opened whilst we were moving and my 2 dogs must of jumped/fell out. Amazingly a friend saw them and called them over after seeing them running down a street, few minor cuts and scrapes but they will be ok. I didn't get any beeps or warnings, is this normal?

I have noticed I don't get a warning if I don't buckle my belt, has the previous owner pulled a fuse? We had the windows and roof down so didn't notice the road noise until someone flagged us down and we absolutely <beep> ourselves!

re the boot opening , can only be 1 of 2 reasons.
either the tailgate wasn't closed properly , or, there's a fault with the locking mechanism.
Not saying which it could of been.

Have you tried opening and shutting the tailgate since to see if it happens again ? or indeed to make sure it does lock in the closed position.
What happens when you central lock the car ?, is the tailgate locked shut , or can you lift the tailgate open
With the tailgate open , does the light on the bottom edge light up ( Red and White lense) ?
I think there's a micro switch on the lock mechanism that tells the display if the tailgate's open and whether to put the Red/White light on or not.

I don't have a seatbelt warning if I don't wear it either, But I do have warning diagram for any door or tailgate that's open.
I don't know if there should be a seat belt warning or not tbh (I've never worn a seatbelt since I had to jump out of a lorry to avoid a head on collision), It may be a thing that's coded out in VCDS.

The red and white light functions and the boot locks. I've been experimenting trying to convince my missus it's safe all day.

I have opened and closed the boot a few times, I even jammed a towel i keep in the back to protect the bumper in the locking mechanism and it still latches. I then tried a different technique, not a slam but with more force and found the boot closes, no warning on the dash (which you don't get in park anyway) but it takes minimal force to open. A scary finding, I'm amazed a 2003 car doesn't have a warning noise of some sort.

Lots of things transpired that led to the event though, under normal closing it latches, we had all the windows down and the roof open so didn't notice the wind noise, the dogs must of fell against it when I had to drive up a bank down a narrow street which unlatched the boot, then when I accelerated away they fell backwards (2x25kg dogs) which combined with the wind opened the boot lid as by the time we realised it was fully open!

I had to stop my Missus pouring petrol over the car and torching it, it was just an unlucky series of events, she will calm down eventually.

Find a field, let her drive and you sit in the boot.... quickest way to resolution (Please don;t try that!!)

By chance today, I parked the car with engine running and in 'Park' and opened drivers door. i got the warning on the display. I then opened the tailgate to see if that showed up as well ( still in park remember) , and sure enough that showed as open on the same display as the door. Try it on yours to see if it does the same.
Admittedly , as you said , the warning doesn't show up on first start up in 'Park' until you've moved the car though.

First obvious thought from what you've said is, has the hook that the door locks onto ( under the fold down chrome cap in middle of the top of floor/shelf ) come loose and slid down a bit ? effect of this would be the door lock doesn't completely 'grab' over the hook, enabling a small force to make the lock 'jump' the hook.
The mechanism is a mechanical hook in the door that 'grabs' over a round bar in the floor of the car. The round bar is on a slider/clamp for adjustment.Failing that your looking into the door lock mechanism itself. I asked about the Red/White light lens as I think this controlled by the door lock mechanism, I could be wrong though
There's more detail within the door and the lock mechanism , but I've not needed to look inside the panel on an avant yet.
