DRC Suspension Issue
Re: DRC Suspension Issue
I had an intermittent suspension warning light that became permanent. Car was taken in and as driven into service area by reception guy he commented that it appeared to be knocking, I presumably had got used to it. End game, they replaced the off side front suspension unit and sensors, adjusted tracking and re calibrated all the other gizmos. Net result, runs much much more smoothly...different car. All done under warranty as car is only 10 months old

Re: DRC Suspension Issue
Some of the forum members on here will already know that I had the same knocking problems you guys are experiencing, and have heard my input before, but I thought I'd contribute to this thread anyway in the hope it helps somebody get their car fixed, because I wasn't able to get mine fixed !!!!!!! Oh and apologises in advance for a long post !!!!!!!!
The following is obviously only a shortened version of what happen over the space of a few months but it will give you the idea of my experiences.
I complained about the suspension knock from both front shocks from brand new with 50 miles on the clock. I got the, 'its just a characteristic of the car' Sir from the minute I told the dealer what the problem was. They agreed to look at the car anyway and came back to me the following day saying the shocks were all checked and reading the correct pressure so as they couldn't find anything wrong with the car they told me to come and collect. It was obvious from day one that they weren't going to be much help, but I refused to take the car back until the noises were fixed. They then asked for advice from Audi's Technical Department. They again insisted there was no 'fault' with my car, and for that reason they wouldn't even replace the shocks because Audi's Technical Department wouldn't authorise the replacements. When the pressure escalated after a few months my service manager even told me that he had been speaking to someone so high up in Audi's UK technical department that he couldn't be contacted directly, and he advised him that there was no point in changing the shocks because, this was 'normal DRC operation', and even if it did fix the fault it would return at some other point in time and I would be unhappy again. Have you ever heard as much bull <beep> in your life ???? In fact, for months they never once deviated away from, its an 'unavoidable characteristic' Sir !!!!!!!
I then escalated my issue to Mr Andre Konsbruck, the managing director of Audi UK. I did that simply because I had DRC issues in my previous B7 RS4 (that incidentally after a long drawn out episode were eventually fixed), and as I wanted a prompt repair this time with my new improved B8 car, I thought I was doing the right thing. I kept asking how did a 'fixable fault' 7 years ago has now become an 'unavoidable characteristic', (Audi actually acknowledged the problem and gave anyone with B7 RS4 DRC issues extended warranty coverage on their shocks). To this day I still haven't got a straight answer to this question !!!!! When I told them my last B7 RS4 had this exact same fault and was repaired by replacing its shocks, all they would say was, we cannot comment on what fault your last car had, but after investigating my current complaint they can categorically say there is no fault with my car.
As I had been asking technical questions regarding this noise, Audi UK said they would need more information from the Audi factory before answering, but did eventually offer to fly a guy from Audi's Technical Department to test drive the car with me and discuss why this was happening and replace my shocks while I was standing beside him. As he was more qualified to answer technical questions, I was told that he could give me the answers I was asking for. I was over the moon to hear this because it was the first time they had actually offered to replace anything on the car. I was told I'd be contacted when they could arrange the visit and I could be there in person. I have to be honest, I was sceptical about this as I didn't for one minute believe that health and safety these days would allow a Joe blogs like me to stand in the dealers workshop while a technical guy replaced my shocks, but took them at their word. A few weeks later I got a call to say the guy had been and gone, had driven my car and said there was no fault, so wouldn't be replacing anything. I was raging and don't believe for one minute they sent anyone over !!!!!!! They did give me the guys name and I asked for his contact details so I could talk to him about his thoughts after test driving my vehicle but they said it was against their policy to give out his contact details. Mh......m !!!!!
Even before purchase I tried to convince myself about the DRC thing as it was an upgrade, so carefully listened when I drove their demonstrator which had no DRC noises. I even asked their master tech had he ever worked on any B8 cars for this DRC fault to which he replied no. Unfortunately for me the day I left my car in they insisted we take a test drive in another RS4 sitting on the forecourt, and this didn't turn out to be a good idea as this car had the same knock too. That's why they kept saying they couldn't understand why I was pushing this as the noise had been demonstrated to me in another vehicle, so was deemed to be normal. They refused to listen to the fact that I had driven two other cars at their dealership which had no noise. One was my original test drive and the other was on an Audi RS driving day I was invited too !
The saga continued for a couple of months with a member of their senior team. I even tried to offically reject the car because of my DRC issues, but Audi wouldn't accept the rejection because they said there was no 'fault' with my car. They agreed the noises were there, but consistently came up with statements like :
* (Quote from the dealer)........Audi technical asked us to check the pressures and then carry out no further work if the vehicle demonstrates no reason for concern with the pressure of the shocks and if demonstrated with another vehicle.
* (Quote from Audi's senior team)......... that the noise heard is consistent with other vehicles tested and relates to the reaction valves in the DRC suspension unit and as such there is no repair planned as this noise is a function normality.
* When asked why this knock cannot be heard in all RS4's, I got the following reply from the senior team...........Due to manufacturing tolerances it is possible that parts of the DRC system in some vehicles may display this characteristic.
* (Quote from Audi's senior team)......... we can only reiterate at this point that there would be no benefit to replacing the shock absorbers as the noise is operational.
* (Quote from dealer after I told them I wouldn't take the car back until the issues were fixed)........ May I suggest you reflect over the weekend and reconsider taking the car back with the reassurance that the car is as it should be.
These are obviously only a few statements regarding my issues and I genuinely tried to escalate it as high as possible, but Audi UK simply would do absolutely nothing for me. I even asked for my money back and it to be used against a new Q7 just to keep things amicable and try to rekindle a relationship with Audi, but they refused again as they insisted there was no fault with my car and at that stage they didn't see the need for any goodwill.
I tried contacting some of the consumer programs like 'don't get done get dom' and even tried Auto Express, but to cut a long story short you get an automated reply nicely saying thanks for getting in touch , but as they arent filming at the minute, their mailbox isn't checked on a daily basis, but if the researchers have an interest in your story they will get in touch. I suppose this eliminates the need to reply to every single email. Needless to say I never heard back from any of them. Someone mentioned about contacting watchdog. The forum guys in years gone past did contact Watchdog about DRC issues with the B7 RS4 but they were basically told that it didn't affect enough of the population for them to look into it. So that avenue was hit on the head.
I had no other option but to take the car back as it was sitting at the dealers for a few months, and they were doing nothing to help. To add to my frustration, the master tech's didn't even have the ability to re pressurize the shocks correctly and it was knocking worse than before it went in. That coupled with the fact that the steering was now sitting off centre when driving down a straight road just absolutely destroyed my confidence in the dealers ability.
So basically no matter what way I turned I was getting no where and as both my front shocks were knocking I simply couldn't live with the noises on a daily basis I regrettably ended up selling the car. Its such a shame because its a great car bar this bloody DRC issue. I was frustrated because this RS was a long term keeper in my opinion and as such I had paid for both a 5 year Audi warranty, and actually paid £2000 more than a mainland dealer quote (I live in Northern Ireland) because I was reassured that if I bought from my local dealer and serviced the car there, if a problem ever arose Audi goodwill would be applied. Money absolutely wasted and no goodwill was ever given.
I also asked for an official letter from Mr Konsbruck stating what they have been telling me verbally all along, that the noises I was hearing were an unavoidable characteristic due to Audi's allowed tolerances with their suspension components, and to state that in no way did the car handle any differently, and most importantly, that there were no safety issues, and that it was as they put, it normal operation. I specifically asked for this because I was convinced the car would be hard to sell on, and therefor asked for their help, by officially stating in a letter simply what they have been telling me. The objectives were, to satisfy the next potential owner that it wasn't a problem, give them peace of mind, help me sell the car, and to get it in writing officially. Its no surprise to date, I have never had a reply from Mr Konsbruck, or indeed any official statement from Audi UK.
I have no doubt I have missed some parts of the saga, but off the top of my head thats basically summarises it !
I will continue to watch this post with interest to see how any of you get on, especially regarding the rejection. Best of luck lads, because honestly, I think you'll need it. Audi will never admit there is a fault with the DRC. Too many consequences if they do !!!!!!!!!!! Having said that though, I hope you all get a better outcome than I did, and at the very least get a repair. I have been an Audi fan for years, but my enthusiasm has diminished simply because of DRC problems in my last two RS4's. I have no problem with a car having a fault, because lets face it, most do at some point in time. But as one someone else on here has already said, its the way you get treated when you have a fault that has a huge impact on your enthusiasm for the brand. Come on Audi, do the right thing !!!!!!!!

Re: DRC Suspension Issue
They will have learned from the B7/C5. This time they won't accept liability for anything.
Re: DRC Suspension Issue
This is starting to scare me..... I seriously hope my car is OK - and I feel for you guys fighting the issue, it takes too much time out of the day, you almost end up obssesed, I was hoping these issues had been fixed, being an original RS6 owner!
Zero Drama
Re: DRC Suspension Issue
Is it possible for you guys to post up which dealers you guys went to.
Re: DRC Suspension Issue
That would be a good idea actually as certain dealers do seem to be more keen to help regarding this issue !
Its immaterial which dealer I used as I live in northern Ireland and most of you guys are on the mainland, but Belfast Audi were simply useless !!!!

Re: DRC Suspension Issue
Cam I make a suggestion and I am more than happy to get this started. Back in 2007 a few us drafted up a letter and created a rolling post that quite simply listed the forum username, the car and very brief description of the fault. The idea being the next person would copy the list in to his post and add his name and so on. I drafted a letter which I think each person altered and we all ran off the list and sent it to Audi. This was instrumental in getting the B7 extended warranty through.
Audi will not do a thing until people stand up and take them on and why would they!
I will dig out the old post and start a new thread if there is a willingness from board members.

Re: DRC Suspension Issue
Voice in numbers is the way to get this sorted
Let's get a list started
I'd suggest we group as three ;
1) Failures repaired ;
2) Failures not repaired (characteristic of the car) ;
3) No Failures ;
Graeme 4130 - Sept14 car 13k miles
Worth also recording who's had a failure repaired and which centre did this as it's a good levelling argument with Audi UK for those that are being turned away as they should be applying consistency to the way in which they're managing issues like this

Re: DRC Suspension Issue
Yes - that's the car, it sold me on the whole RS4 thing, hence why I've bought one. Not that one because the Mrs didn't get on with the blue.
Its a lovely lovely car - if you're after it speak to stephen reed at Epsom Audi
