New Owner in the North West - First problem.
Hi everyone,
I picked up my Avus silver RS6 this week and am over the moon with it. It's already had most of the common problems sorted by Unit20 and i took it straight in for a gearbox service/new sump/health check and its (touch wood) all in good order! I've had quick cars before but this really does blow my mind!
The car is standard apart from Bilstein coilovers and I will probably keep it that way, just tidy it up cosmetically and maybe put a modern headunit in it as it is hopefully my daily drive for a couple years. Stage 1 maybe someday...if I'm feeling brave.
The previous owner wasn't really into car cleaning (understatement) but I liked the idea of a challenge so I've put a lot of work in already cleaning it up, but I really f@*ked up!
I bought the Meguires headlight restoration kit and was really happy with how it was going, the drivers side looks great and I was 30 seconds away from finishing the passenger side when disaster struck, the wool pad got too hot and I have a patch of heat distortion on the headlight. The stealers have quoted me ~£730 for a new light! I can't find one on eBay or any online breakers so looks like I will just have to live with it for now, so angry and frustrated at myself for making a hash of a relatively simple job and having to look at it every day! Does anyone know of a pair or just the passenger side light they would like to sell?
Dave

Couple of pics, it's hard to capture the distortion in a picture!

Re: New Owner in the North West - First problem.
FON! & welcome.
Car looks great....better/more pics would have been good...even though I haven't done so myself!...it's always nice to see some piccies.
Two more rules, always take pics of a correct and proper parked car....and make sure the front RS6 Badge is fitted in the right space.
Can't you find a generic A6 light?, Shouldn't be more than a couple of hundred squids.

I fitted Angel Eyes to my Allroad, they were from a German seller on Ebay and about £150 the pair. You could consider popping the lens and fixing to your unit. It's a bumper off job by the way...
Re: New Owner in the North West - First problem.
Thanks guys, that one on eBay looks good, can anyone translate german? I don't think they will ship to the UK. The RS6 has its own specific lights from what I understand, hence why it's hard to find a spare, I've read via the search function that you can remove the lights, heat them up in an oven to soften the glue then pull them apart, as all I need is a new front lens but can't even find one of them.
The Car park has wide spaces that are really short so it's impossible to park "correctly". It's at the back of my work. What's wrong with my badge?

Re: New Owner in the North West - First problem.
1. Use google chrome - it will auto translate.
2. I think he will ship to the UK
3. The parts website I use seems to say the RS6 headlights are shared across all the V8 range - so same headlight unit for a 4.2 & S6 as well as long as it's the xenon one, I think.

Yes you can remove them in an oven - I did this on the 530i I had, worked fine. You should be able to find something on ebay.
Re the Badge, I couldn't see it in your pics... but there are threads here with the correct space the front badge is supposed to occupy on the front grill....surprisingly many cars have it wrong.
Thanks

Aside from the issue you had, would you recommend the headlight restoration kit? My headlights have a couple of faded areas that could do with work.

Yes mate the Meguires kit did work really well, it's a bit scary at first wet sanding the lights but mine were completely opaque to the extent that the lights were crap at night. I thought to myself I can't make it any worse! I don't know how it got through its last MOT. After the wet sanding you polish with a wool pad attached to a drill, they came up literally like new, I just made the cardinal sin of trying to make them perfect and went too hard for too long.sulli wrote:Aside from the issue you had, would you recommend the headlight restoration kit? Watched a YooToob vid which I have not tried (yet) but if the results shown are to be believed this guy restored his lenses with;

Re: New Owner in the North West - First problem.
Quick update from me, I've found a headlight on german ebay so really happy about that, waiting for it to be delivered. I was tempted to buy a new drivers side one but the boss lady discovered my plans and told me that this was not a wise move. I've fitted new number plates and surround, new wipers and a roof aeriel. It's really freshened up the exterior.
I've read about many people with GPS problems with RNS-D, does anyone have a link to an ebay seller for one that sits behind the dash? For £10 I might as well get it working. Think im going to replace the headunit with something more modern so I can connect via Bluetooth and have DAB etc, any recommendations welcome, I would want something pretty plain and OEM looking.
Car is looking and driving great, really happy with it, took a friend out who has a 400bhp evo9 and he was mighty impressed. Also my 84 year old aunt thought it was a nice car to be in when I took her for lunch! It really can do it all!
