A couple of people have enquired about the specific tow-bar that I fitted as they are interested in one for their '6' for bike racks or small trailers.
My tow-bar was from a 2001 pre-face lift C5 A6 Saloon although I believe that they are the same for the Avant also.
It was a Westfalia factory fit detachable tow-bar.
It replaces your standard bumper mounts and adds a third securing vertical bolt further forwards in the shell (the holes are already there on all C5 A6s).
The bar itself sits behind the aluminium bumper bar although you'll need to trim this to clear the fixing hole for the detachable tow-bar and drop down electrics bracket if yours doesn't come with it's own. Because mine came from a car that I was breaking, it already had the aluminium bumper car.
As far as I know, this is the only tow-bar that will fit to an RS6 with the standard RS6 rear bumper without having to cut the bumper.
The detachable tow-bar itself does not clear the bumper entirely but pushes up the very lower section just a little when it's in position. There is enough 'give' or flex in the bumper for this. I would expect that this would cause some small paint damage as everything flexes but this will only be on the lower downward facing surface that you never see.
The electrics bracket and socket do not interfere with the bumper in anyway, neither does the make structure.
I do miss the RS6 but as our son has just arrived, I'm not really thinking too much about cars right now
