G28 speed sensor

Post by chrisn6 » Tue Nov 13, 2012 5:01 pm

Hi guys,

It looks like I've been supplied the wrong sensor. Furthermore, my mechanic is struggling to get to the sensor, but from what he can see, the cable is part of the sensor and looks bigger than the one I've been supplied which requires the cable plugs into it.

Has anyone here replaced one? Any tips?

Thanks in advance,

~Chris

I'm also slightly confused by some people referring to it as a crank position sensor. Some Audis appear to have both a crank sensor G4 and an engine speed sensor G28. Does the RS6 make do with just the one or is there also a G4 sensor which is maybe the one my mechanic has found? Anyone have a schematic that shows the layout?

Thanks again,

~C

Sorry if I've missed something, but what it the problem you have?

RPM not working or speedo. RPM is normally a crank position sensor, speedo is normally a gearbox/final drive sensor. I'd be surprised if the RS6 used a cable operated sensor as they aren't particularly reliable. More likely a hall effect sensor.

Have you looked on elsaweb/vagcat and had the car scanned for errors?

Hi Nobby,

Sorry, you obviously missed my other thread "Worrying Experience" where Shop correctly diagnosed a faulty engine speed/crank sensor. My Vagcom verified this. I sourced a sensor which is not the right one, and it looks like it's a main dealer only part after further searches. Looks like a job for Virdee after all...

I just wanted to be 100% sure that there is only one crank/speed sensor on the beast, as many other Audis have two.

I think that's wrong Stoo.

G28 is engine speed sensor
G40 is cam sensor 1, G163 is cam sensor 2.

Cam sensors are a little bigger and have 2 bolts that attach them.

Nobby is correct according to the system layout diagram I found in a C5 study guide. Should be receiving the sensor from Audi today. Apparently it takes between 2 and 3 hours to fit.
