Oil top-up query

Hi Guys. Quick question re. oil-top up. I had Audi full variable service including longlife oil change at the end of May this year. I have done 3,000 miles since then and the service schedule on the MMI says 8,200 miles or 379 days till next oil change. Today I had the oil warning light come on for the first time. I checked the level with the dip stick and it was slightly below the line. I am not aware of any oil leak based on the floor of my garage. 1) is it usual to have to top up the oil between changes, even without hard driving? 2) I went to my local Shell garage and the only synthetic oil they have is Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40. The hand book says to use either VW 504 00 for long life service or VW 502 00 for inspection service. Can anyone advise what oil I should be using for top up in these circumstances?

use the proper Audi stuff
I burn enough oil every 5K or so to have the oil light come on, so i keep a 1 litre bottle in the nice carrier box in the book

I've had to put roughly a litre in in last month, I had a service in March so quite similar to yourself.

Same 1ltr. 5W 30 always in the boot

Audi Slough tells me to use one of these:

Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5w 30
Castrol Edge 5w 30
Mobil 1 Esp Formula 5w 30

Any preferences out there?

i just had mine serviced by Crawley Audi and they ises Shell Helix and gave me an extra oil in a cool pouch.

what oil do audi use when changing it?is it one specific oil for all garages through out the uk or does it depend on garage?just im using catrol edge and in 125days i got a service coming up.but i think i will buy the oil and ask them to use the castrol edge,does anybody know how much audi charge for the oil only in a service?

Crawley and coulsdon both said they use the shell helix, but that might just be regional, who knows

This is quite common for the oil sensor to become faulty after a service, get it checked on VCDS, mine was shot and come on 500 miles after a service, others with a c6 have had the same issue.
