I just did a run from Frankfurt to Calais which was 375 miles and 374 on Motorway. Shell Racing 100 helped with the economy, but I averaged 75 mph and 26.4mpg so nowhere near 410 on a tank. I did avail myself of the freedom of the autobahn a few times though :-)

always wondered where the logic in this comes from.

The fuel pump draws fuel from the bottom of the tank so any sediment is drawn through as it arrives, not like there's a level of fuel down in the bottom separate to all the other fuel?

If you drive like miss daisy and stick with 60mph you might squeeze 350miles but 400 is well beyond the rs4,s means..anyway how can you drive 400 miles without nailing the throttle??? Its like saying can you suck a rowntree fruit pastile without chewing???? You cant its impossible :biggrin3:

Most I've ever done on a tank is 390 miles, and that was really pottering on empty roads in southern France.

Don't think you have a snowballs chance in hell of doing 410 on crowded UK roads.

Definitely put a back up 5L spare can in the boot for that one!

On a holiday in Scotland a few years ago we almost ran out and it was scary. Had to put crappy 95 fuel in at a budget station as an emergency. Since then, whenever I pass V Power, we fill up!

Paul.

I don't believe that rubbish either, you're right, it draws from the bottom, and it's filtered, the tanks aren't metal either so no problems with rust in the tank.
I've gotten to the petrol station 5 miles after the needle stopped moving before and there wasn't a problem. Probably wouldn't like to do it again mind lol

I'll be impressed if you can do a 410 mile run, but I doubt it. Prove me wrong! :jump_clap:

I don't think the fuel pumps go right to the very bottom of the tank.

To be honest, modern fuel additives prevent much of this from occurring. You'll only really get it if you store the car with full tanks and it goes off and starts to break down. There are also multiple filters both in the fuel pumps in the tank (there are two - one is a lifter) and the one by the drivers door.

My thoughts:

I think the problem happens when the filter becomes blocked, or sufficiently blocked to result in insufficient fuel flow.

When there's plenty of fuel in the tank and you're driving along the sediment is being disturbed and to a certain extent distributed throughout the remaining fuel, so the density of sediment is lower and the risk of the filter becoming blocked is lower. But as the fuel level drops the ratio of sediment to fuel increases and hence the filter is more likely to become blocked.

Just my 6d....

Interesting thought. I think you're probably right although I suspect there's very little sediment to start with. I volunteer someone to cut their tank open to find out lol

This topic's just reminded me I need to change my fuel filter, it's done 141k miles on the original I think, there's no service invoice that says it's been changed
