Haha, it's not that bad. Not sure it's something I'd go out and buy though!

From what they've told me, the steering system on the RS4, and A4 I guess, in theory can't be off centre because the car can adjust the angle of the steering wheel itself, independently of the alignment set up. There is an angle sensor so the car knows when the steering wheel is central and level.

Fingers crossed when they get this other RS4 in that it with be obviously different to mine, which it should be, then they can't come back and say "They are all like that sir".

Not heard anything today, but they did say that the workshop foreman wasn't in today.

Not by 30 degrees.
That sounds like somebody who hasn't got a clue but needs to come up with something fast.

Andy

Spoke with assistant Service manager at dealer to book in for 1,000km once over.

I asked about rectifying the 10mm off centre (or thereabouts) steering wheel.

Not a problem, even with lane assist, active cruise, blah blah blah. They just have to do the adjust under the correct code control in the diagnostics AND their alignment gear is very very special, such that a full alignment job (such as after a minor accident etc) has 6.5 hours allocated to it.

So, unless they are overly and unrealistically confident (didn't sound like anything other than he knew exactly what he was talking about) it sounds like just a process of having the right gear and knowing what to do with it.

They will adjust mine in the day, whether it's 10mm or 40mm out. How long yours been gathering dust in their garage?

I'll give you an update as to the efficacy of the story at the end of next week

Mine has been gathering dust in their workshop since last Wednesday while they await arrival of another RS4 to compare it to. Getting annoyed now it has to be said!

Insane - why do they need to see the car in the workshop. Just get on the phone and call another dealer with an RS4 and say 'can you take a photo on full lock both sides please'.?

I initially left it with them because the electric tailgate had packed up as well, so they were going to fix that and they were supposed to be getting the other car in last Friday.

No idea why they have to get another car in. Surely this same steering system must be on most of the A4/5's that they have in stock? Apparently they have to get the data off the other car to send to Audi, but you'd think their other dealer in the group could have done that rather than transporting the car on a 100 mile round trip.

So after a week and a half with the car, the official line from the dealer is "they are all like that sir".

They were supposed to be emailing me videos from my car and the comparison car to show this, but despite 3 reminders this afternoon, I have no videos.

I'm going to drive the other car they have on Monday. P*ssed off to say the least. :(

Mine seems fine to me - so I don't think they are "all like that sir"

I would tell them that you are immediately commencing action to reject the car. Needs to be escalated to Audi UK senior mgmt ASAP (if not already). So stupid and shortsighted of these guys.

There deffo not all like that.

Mine had the same issue from new which was rectified a week later. It did take them the full 6.5 hours, (which seems like a crazy amount of time until you factor in all the interconnected systems) but when I picked it up it was perfect.

I have to say from the moment I pulled out the car park it made driving it a lot more enjoyable......

Thank you everyone for the helpful comments.

I was really hoping that they'd get this other car in and identify the fault, and that would be that.

I'm still waiting for the videos that they've supposedly sent, but they are claiming that the other car is exactly the same as mine. Im going down there Monday to drive the other car, but if they seriously think I'm going to just accept mine and live with it, it's just not going to happen.

Things are never simple! :)

Just a quick update, finally managed to get to the dealer this afternoon.

The 'they are all like that' turned out to be mixed message between service dept and service reception. Basically on a car with dynamic steering, if you sit and spin the wheel lock to lock while switching between modes the steering wheel will stop at some odd angles until it works out where centre is, so yes from that point they are all like that...

To add further confusion mine appeared to have reset itself after not been driven for a week, so we sat in it and lock to lock angles were central, exactly the same as the loan car.

So we went out in the loan car, and I finally got to drive an RS4 with normal steering. :) Definitely not like mine at all, so,at least I've confirmed I'm not going loopy or just being overly picky.

Back to the dealer went out in mine which drove 'kind of' straight for the first half a mile, then defaulted back to its usual off centre position.

In short they don't have a clue what's up with it, but at least now they can go back to Audi and confirm it's definitely not right, and not the same as the loan car they've got. They are thinking ECU's next from what I understand.
