Hindhead Tunnel Run - Sunday 27th July.

Post by IanH755 » Fri Jul 11, 2014 8:45 pm

Hi all, to celebrate my new noisy exhaust I fancy doing a Tunnel Run and the closest to me just happens to be the Hindhead Tunnel which just happens to be the longest too at 1.25 miles of V8 filled bliss.

I looked at what other events are going on this month and picked Sunday the 27th July meeting at the Mill pub at Elstead (post code GU8 6LE) at 10am to 10.30am. I picked that date as it seems to be empty of events down south and after I checked the Highway Agencies website I found that there's no work going on either so it should be a clear blast.

However, as I live about 80 miles away other than the tunnel I have no idea what else is around there (i.e Pubs for food, good driving roads etc) as just driving up and down the tunnel 5-6 times (inc passenger rides if possible) "may" get a little boring :D so if anyone fairly local has any advice please post it up here.

Here's a map of the general area so you know whereabouts in the UK the tunnel is.

Once again, apart from the date which I can't move (work stuff), please feel free to pitch in with any other ideas!

Cheers.....................................Ian

***EDIT*** Changed the Meet starting point to The Mill at Elstead post code GU8 6LE, same meeting time 10.30am!!!!!

Consider calling in at Mercedes World at Brooklands and annoy the AMG drivers :beerchug: For lunch there is a pretty good cafe at Brooklands or if you want to spend more ££ go to the restaurant upstairs

Remember the tunnel uses average speed camera as well

Farnborough air show will be finished on the weekend of 20th, however some of the roads around Farnborough may still be closed off .. they started the traffic "smoothing changes" last weekend, which is 2 weeks before the airshow.. so not sure how quick they will be lifting them up

Thanks for the SPECS reminder - 70mph limit through there folks!

MB World is something to consider as it's only around 30mins away and I'm sure they wouldn't mind the "competition" showing up.

My plan so far is this - Meet at the Mill in Elstead at 10.30am, start the runs at 11.30 after chatting/catching up with everyone, meet back at the Pub for 12.00-12.15 after 3-5 runs for another quick chat and make sure we're all still there before either a 30min drive to Brooklands for lunch or to somewhere more local (recommendations from locals please).

There's 2 places to do a U-Turn, one north 2 miles after the tunnel and one south 100m after the tunnel, so a single up and down run should only be around 7-10 mins at most. However please be sensible at the U-Turn points as the locals get very angry with idiots driving around there and contact the police regularly if they see any stupid stuff.

Please add yourself to the list -

1. Ian

I'm taking a couple of cameras (Drift HD and digicam) for the run!
