Did they spend that same time, development and money on the DRC shocks, Oil cooler, Clutch system?

Audi exist to create shareholder value and there are a whole bunch of complex pressures across a corporation that constantly impinge on manufacturing and design.

I'm in no way defending Audi, believe me, I think it's shortsighted - but such is life these days.
